After seeing the final two episodes, I just don't know how they'd do any of that live-action. Between the rapid change in scenery as well as the train sequence (which was one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a long time), it just feels like this medium was the right choice.

I do hope they're able to get the whole comic run adapted.

I used to be very anti-animation. Somewhere in the back of my mind I'd filed it away under 'kid stuff.' Luckily I learned that it is a way of telling the kinds of stories that would never be green-lit in live action due to costs and complexity. If you like genre stuff, it multiplies your choices tenfold.

Just finished. Wow, what a ride that was. Excellent show.

I almost quit during the first episode because it felt like a cliche, dull superhero origin story. Then the last 10 minutes of all hell breaking loose happened, and I was hooked.

I was hooked from episode one as well. Fantastic show. No experience with the comic here. I too have had trouble accepting animation as a grown up dramatic medium, but that's certainly been beginning to change over the past decade. The voice cast is definitely mind-blowing, though when there's an all-star cast like this I always feel like they're keeping hardworking voice actors out of work. Like, why was John Hamm in such a small role? It definitely gives the opening scene some heft I guess.

Spoiler:

- So, this walks a strange line between "classic superhero conventions as reality" (it leans into the silliness of the past 80 years of comics and just accepts it--everything is real and happening on the same planet Earth, and everyone accepts it as normal) and the hyperrealism of more recent comics and stories (i.e. this is what it would look like if the horrible violence and destructive power of these characters wasn't sanitized). I know it's not the only one to do these things, but it's the first I've encountered that does both at the same time. I don't "enjoy" the horrendous violence, but I appreciate the "that's what it would actually be like" factor. Real violence is horrific, and these characters are capable of extreme degrees of it, sometimes unintentionally. It adds to the stakes big time.

- Usually, these incredibly generic superheroes, many of which are riffs on classic characters, would annoy me. But then you realize that's the point. Their dumb names sound exactly as silly as "Superman", "Batman", and "Spider-Man" would have the first time you heard them, before they were cultural phenomenona. Their characters, on the other hand, are generally good and often deep. Yeah, we've seen Mark's general story told dozens of times. But it's how well it's told, and the other unique elements, that makes it good.

- The animation is great, though the cartoon convention of having everyone wear the same outfit all the time is a bit distracting, with Mark's constantly untucked left shirttail hanging down.

- The final Omni-Man reveal... I wouldn't say I was disappointed. It fit. But I was hoping for more. Maybe there are details I missed, or it's that the story was compressed and rearranged for the animated series. But I don't understand why, to destabilize the planet, Nolan had to kill the Guardians then? (Unless it was the the pre-planned final stages of the mission, but I don't recall that being explained.) Did it have something to do with Mark's emergence? If so, why? Nolan says something at the end like, "It's OK, I'll just kill you start again... what's another 17 years?" What does that mean? How was having a child with Viltrumite powers intrinsic to his goal? And what was he doing to destabilize things over the past two decades? Sure seems like he was doing more good than harm, even if it was calculated. Unless his betrayal of humanity was supposed to be a pivotal part of that plan. But yeah, as others have said before me, it does make total sense that a real-world superman would be a superior asshole.

To answer your last question
Spoiler:
Mark’s birth and his powers emerging are a very integral part of the Viltrimite plans. You’ll find out why later. There’s quite a bit Omni Man left out about the current plight of his race.

I've almost finished the first compendium of the comics. Really good so far. They keep throwing massive twists and I'm loving it.

The show pulls directly from the comics and isn't going all Game of Thrones.

The Nolan plot is very well thought out. Can't wait to see where this thing goes.

Ah, cool... thanks. So it's part of the plot and not just sloppy writing. It can be hard to tell. It's nice to have a show that doesn't feel the need to set everything up plainly and resolve most of it by season's end, but it can also be a bit frustrating if you don't have any idea of what's coming.

I am flying through the comics and on the third compendium. This series is awesome. They do a damn good job of ending an issue with an "I MUST see how this plays out" cliffhanger. Maybe all comics do, but this is the first series I've ever read. Really good stuff.

It may be a bit out of date at this point, but Alan Moore's Miracleman is the inspiration for comics like Invincible.

And true to form, Alan Moore had his name removed from this collection. He does love to be angry.

I started watching this, and it is good. My 4 year old daughter started watching with me, she has serious concerns (why did J.K. Simmons kill all of those superheros?) but I like it so far. And it didn't hold my daughter's interest all that long, maybe she didn't care for my explanation.

Oh hai. It’s me. Here to ask my favorite question:
Which to consume first (if both worthy): comic or TV?

98% RT for those that care, like me.

It’s certified fresh, just like me.

I would just dive into the show. Getting all the comics would be pricey.

Will do , thanks.

Didn’t see a rating on RT (was thinking my 12 YO might watch with me) but from the bit I gathered reading here (I just skimmed, trying to avoid spoilers), it’s hyper violent?

We absolutely loved watching Arcane, but I’m assuming it’s beyond that level of violence (which wasn’t too bad IIRC).

I think the only really violent animated things I’ve seen are some of the shorts from the excellent Death, Love and Robots.

I would not watch this with kids, no. It's rated TV-MA for language and violence. Clearly opinions and practice differ, but I'm going on the record as saying it's not for kids.

It's somewhere between Arcane and The Boys from what I recall. Less intentionally shocking than The Boys, but it doesn't lean away from the violence, either.

HR
Amazon said the second season of the series based on creator Robert Kirkman’s comic book of the same name would return Nov. 3, with the first of four of the eight-episode sophomore run. New episodes will bow weekly on the streamer, with the second half of the superhero title arriving at a date to be determined in early 2024.

It's about time!

At the same time, I do wish they'd stop splitting seasons with so few episodes, especially since they (multiple studios) seem to have a habit of only finishing the first half, releasing those, and then the second half getting delayed for months. Or years (I call this Seasonus Fratres Venturus.)

A standalone, single-shot prequel about Atom Eve kinda stealth dropped yesterday as well. It's labeled "Season 202 Ep1" in the Invincible series page.
The episode, titled "Invincible Atom Eve," depicts how the character received her powers and became a hero, finally shedding light on her past on-screen. Eve was born as a government weapon manipulated at birth to have the supernatural power to manipulate objects at the molecular level, but she grew up with the Wilkins family after the scientist who created her saved her from her fate. A teaser released for the episode shows her discovering her powers at a young age, choosing to use them to be a superhero. While her powers make her a force to be reckoned with, she's also forced to come to terms with all the violence and what it's like being different from everyone else, causing friction with her adoptive parents. Although she's urged to hide her abilities, she's determined to use her badass gift to help people rather than stand idly by.

A week or so ago I decided to try reading the comics.

Wow, these are good. Better than the show. I'm probably 50 issues into the run already, which is fast reading (most of the time I read one or two issues per day.) It's also amazing to me how well they reproduced the art style for the show.
