My first book is now available on Amazon

Post by Jaymann »

Over five years in the making, it is finally done! Amazon link.
Image

It has sex, drugs, rock n' roll, online gaming and is chock full of obscure OO references. More of a novella in length, you can consume it in a sitting or two. It is free on Kindle for the next five days, so have at it. I had to set the price at $2.99 because anything less and Bezos takes 65%, and I can't stomach that. Criticism, mocking and even praise are welcome. Do an Amazon review if you are feeling feisty.

Bon appétit.

I'll wait the five (or so) days so you get at least a little money. I look forward to reading it!

I don't understand how someone whose location is "California" can write Confessions of a Redneck, though.

Fresno. That's where I really learned what a redneck was, and I lived there after Indiana.

Congrats!

Why is it free for five days? Is that an Amazon thing, or is it something you chose as a promotional thing?

Chosen as a promotion. And this was a labor of love, I don't expect to make any money, so I am aiming for downloads.

Fresno is actually on the liberal side now, although kind of a conservative liberal. But the areas around it can be very redneck still. For instance I live in Clovis (a Fresno suburb, although I am sure they would make me move if they heard me say that) which has helped keep Devin Nunes in a job.

I finished both kindergarten and 6th grade at Sierra Vista Elementary in Clovis. I lived here, the one with the red mailbox post (an old well pump - my mother made that thing probably 45 years ago.)

I lived in various places in Fresno from '85 to '87, left after I finished junior high at Kastner.

Anyway, I wonder if I can return the free version for a refund and then buy it again later. :eusa-think:

Sad to say, whatever your cut is, at free it amounts to nothing. :D I did "buy" it though; I will read it (can't say when) and I will review it (and remember to post the review to Amazon) when I'm done.

Clovis has changed quite a bit in the 28 years I have lived here. I went to school in the heart of Fresno but when we had kids we moved to Clovis because of the schools. From where I live in Clovis there are (where, one closed because of the pandemic) 5 microbreweries. And while fine dining is limited there are a number of great locally run places to eat now. Fresno County has also been progressive in voting in taxes for it's own roadways, zoo and libraries.

I like it here, except for the 30 days of plus 100 temps we will get every summer.

The freebie is now over for those of you who want to pay full boat. I really need some reviews (even scathing ones). I want to know what parts people did or did not like. Some readers on Goodreads gave me only 1 or 2 stars (no reviews), but I'm told they are a tough crowd.

I appreciate everyone's support. I have been officially bitten by the writing bug, and have already written 6 chapters of my next book, which I hope will appeal to a wider audience. 8-)

After the initial rush of haters, I got 2 five star ratings on Goodreads. The downloads have trickled down to nothing after the free promotion (except for the paying OOers - thank you!). Still waiting for some reviews.

I got my first review on Amazon, and it sums up the book better than my summary:

Elina
5.0 out of 5 stars As a gamer (who dabbles in poker), I appreciated the setup.
Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2021
Verified Purchase
Quick enjoyable read - finished it in one sitting. Change in tone throughout the story is occasionally jarring - you go from almost a "Big Bang Theory"-ish level of video game humor to a very real level of violence, and then circle right back. Not sure how well the Amazon summary actually reflects what the story is about; I felt it actually took a different direction from what I initially thought. Some characters turn out more surprising than others, the dialogue is snappy (if sometimes feeling unrealistic due to sheer number of obscure pop culture and philosophy references).

She gets it!

Now I have been bitten by the writing bug and am 15 chapters into my next book, a Sci-Fi/Fantasy mashup. It is really starting to flow - had to stop myself at 1:00 AM last night.

I applaud the effort but I put it down a third of the way through. The dialect and characters didn't ring true to me. I'll try to pick it up again later this week though.
