Came across this beautiful cover of Civ 4's theme song. It gave me chills. Liked it so much I bought it on iTunes.

That is awesome. It's fun to see how toy instruments could be used in music production :D

So I downloaded this album :

Image

from Spin a while ago (looks like it was 2011) and have just gotten around to listening to it. The link it the page is http://www.spin.com/articles/free-album ... nevermind/. Apparently it is no longer available for download but there is a cover of Stay Away by Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band that is really great. I have not heard anything else by this band but will go looking after listening to this.

The rest of the album is also good with most of the bands doing reinterpretations of the songs rather than straight covers. While the album is no longer available from Spin, it is on SoundCloud for your listening pleasure. I did not look hard but I imagine that a resourceful internet user in 2015 would not have a hard time finding a copy.

I have heard a bunch of covers by Titus Andronicus and they've all sucked pretty bad. "Birdhouse in Your Soul" was downright painful to listen to.

So it comes a total surprise that their cover of "Breed" is actually really good.

I'm going to have to give the rest of the album a listen later.

I actually bought a Postmodern Jukebox album, the one that both has We Can't Stop and Sweet Child 'O Mine on it, and as a result I've been really liking this cover of One Direction's Story of My Life, again a New Orleans style cover. There's just something about the transformation that makes it so suitable to the style.

yes, it's a good one. check out his solo records. great performer live (used to be a James Brown tribute act, before being 'discovered' and putting out music under his own name).

As a former citizen of the 80's, I really like Robyn Hitchcock's recent cover of The Psychedelic Furs' The Ghost in You.

Came across a cover of Sgt Pepper's/Little Help that blew my mind. Really good. It's by The Art of Time Ensemble. Not a band per say, and more of a collaboration among pop musicians with an orchestra backing covering many genres and maybe a little more focus on the music itself.

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band/With a Little Help from My Friends - Art of Time Ensemble.

They've recently recorded an entire remake of the Beatles album that way.

Here's their version of Lovely Rita with Steven Page as lead.

Warmen's cover of Somebody's Watching Me.

I think they are a Finnish metal band.

Sofia Karlberg's cover of Crazy in Love that was used for the 50 Shades of Gray movie is far, far superior to Beyonce's original.

And now for something completely different:
1970's glam rock band Angel, doing their cover of Walk Away Renee.

Angel was an acquired taste for me, even as a glam rock fan in the 1970's. The strained vocals of Frank Dimino is a high barrier to entry for this band. It took me about a year of repeated listenings to my first album purchase of theirs, which was "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (1977), before I grew to actually enjoy his vocal delivery. Always pushing his limit, with varying results.

wot?

To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

Than you should love this cover by The Marcels. This cut holds a spot in my list of the 10 greatest vocal performances ever.

Sometimes when covering a song, you can be so awesome you don't even have to know the lyrics.

I do like it, though it's not new to me. I'm sort of peripherally aware of the song as a ballad, but the truly familiar version of the song for me is by The Marcels.

I learned from Mrs. Skinypupy over the weekend that the lyrics to Baba Yetu are The Lords Prayer in Swahili. Wikipedia confirms this.

Yes, I realized this as I came to research it after hearing the cover. Quite powerful and moving, even without knowing it, but I think it adds to the feeling once you know what they're singing. It's very neat.

Probably only for REM/Michael Stipe fans, but I love this - modern day Stipe (full grey beard like Santa, and nose rings) covers Bowie's Man Who Sold the World. It's just Stipe and a piano, so again, probably only for fans.

Thanks for this. I found her version of Mercy Street haunting. Would have loved to seen them do that string of songs from Lamb Lies Down. Ill have to watch for them next time they head to the Detroit area.
