Boulder Police rushed to an active shooter call at a King Soopers on Table Mesa Drive near South Broadway. The call came in at around 2:30 p.m.

One man without a shirt on was walked out of the store in handcuffs about an hour after the first call. It appears his right leg was covered in blood. He was led to an ambulance and taken away to a local hospital.
...
At least three medical helicopters were seen landing at Fairview High School.
We are all good here. A friend of a friend was in the store when it happened but hid behind the deli counter and is fine.

My sister’s kids attend Fairview. Thankfully they are out of town right now.

At least 10 confirmed dead now with 1 police officer.

Edit: In a move that'll shock absolutely no one, CNN and MSNBC cut away from their regular programming to cover press conferences about the shooting in Boulder. Fox stuck with Hannity mocking Biden tripping on some stairs.

NY Times
A gunman opened fire at a grocery store in Boulder, Colo., on Monday afternoon, killing 10 people, including a police officer, the authorities in Boulder said.

The police said that they had taken a suspect into custody after the shooting. That person was injured, the authorities said. Videos showed a handcuffed man being escorted from the building by officers, shirtless and with his right leg appearing to be covered in blood.

People inside the grocery, King Soopers, described a harrowing and chaotic scene inside the store.

“I thought I was going to die,” said Alex Arellano, 35, who was working in the meat department at King Soopers, in the South Boulder area, when he heard a series of gunshots, then saw people running toward an exit near his department.

The authorities identified the officer who died as Eric Talley, a 51-year-old who joined the department in 2010. Officer Talley was the first to respond to the scene when reports of a gunman came in, the police said.

You would think "making it harder for violent/mentally ill people to obtain guns specifically designed to kill large numbers of people" wouldn't be a political issue, but here we are.

Thank you. We're shaken, but I've already progressed to anger. It appears that we didn't know anyone in the store at the time of the shooting, including a friend (and his wife) who lives a block away. Still, MHS heard about it quickly enough to watch the asinine live streamer's feed in real time and witnessed things that kept her from sleeping.

I hope we find a societal solution to this gun violence. I wish Atlanta + Boulder will be that tipping point. I do know there's enough influence in Boulder that I anticipate governmental changes at the local and state level.

Glad everyone is safe as well. Unfortunately, we aren't even allowed to seriously discuss gun violence much less try to solve it with our broken politics and decadent culture.

Suspect has been identified, 21 year old named Ahmad Al Issa.

Thus ensuring that the ensuing national dialog will be entirely rational.

Alissa described his brother as “very anti-social” and paranoid, adding that, in high school, he would describe “being chased, someone is behind him, someone is looking for him.”

“When he was having lunch with my sister in a restaurant, he said, ‘People are in the parking lot, they are looking for me.’ She went out, and there was no one. We didn’t know what was going on in his head,” Alissa said, admitting that he believes his brother is mentally ill.

7th mass shooting so far this year.
Where is the gun control plan that Biden ran his campaign on?
Was it not a top priority when he took office?
Will it be now?
Things keep getting worse and worse.

Capitalism tries for a delicate balance: It attempts to work things out so that everyone gets just enough stuff to keep them from getting violent and trying to take other people’s stuff.

We had a school full of freaking tiny children massacred and people ran out to buy more guns. We're just 100 percent broken.

No, but they can be addressed. Plans can be started.
Biden ran on the promise of doing something about gun control.
There has been zero movement on the issue, even after multiple mass shootings on his watch.
How many more do you need?
How many more days until you address it?

From March 3, 2021:
Congressional lawmakers this week revived an effort to enact significant gun safety laws for the first time in more than 25 years by introducing bills to establish a universal background check system that has broad support from the public.

This is ridiculous. Biden has no way to address this on his own. Want to blame someone? This is another of our many issues where the blame is on us all.

You misspelled "week".

The two incidents are likely to spur discussion about gun control legislation in the United States, where firearm deaths are tragically common.
They are also among at least seven mass shootings in the past week across the United States -- including three incidents on Saturday alone.

CNN defines a mass shooting as: a shooting incident which results in four or more casualties (dead or wounded) excluding the shooter(s).

I'd be close to one of the last members here to celebrate something that might lead to reduction of my rights, whereas (I'm guessing) others here probably can't wait for gun confiscation and wouldn't mind a few eggs getting scrambled if it helps reach that objective.

Re: Shootings

Post by malchior »

I found this piece to be very moving. It really speaks to me and does a good job framing what keeps happening with shootings or the wider pandemic.

Washington Post
The scene looked heartbreakingly familiar: the rumble of tactical vehicles, the swarm of law enforcement officers, the long ribbons of yellow police tape and the eyewitness descriptions thick with residual terror. Monday evening’s deadly shooting in Boulder, Colo., which resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including a police officer, was the second mass shooting in a week.

A dreadful normalcy has returned. Muscle memory demands that we lament it — even as all evidence suggests that many of us are unmoved by death. It doesn’t cause behavior to change. It doesn’t shake people from their moorings at the center of their own universe. Death is not a deterrent.

In the days after a mass shooting, the nation mourns and those who died are named. The hearts of our elected officials have been broken so many times that surely they must be in shards by now. The flags are lowered to half-staff. And the president speaks. Joe Biden, a man who is expert at consoling, did the best that he could to say something true that did not sound like a cliche.

...

And still the deaths don’t spur action to make the guns harder to get, to make the guns less efficient. The president, some politicians and many activists cry out for “common sense” gun laws to stop the senseless death even as it seems that they are pleading with a country that’s engaged in a completely different kind of calculation.

Increasingly it seems that we simply do not care about the other person, that other family, someone else’s child. The self is everything. It’s freedom and liberty, whims and desires. Community doesn’t extend beyond one’s front door. Everything else is someone else’s concern.
