Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
I'm potentially interested in that, but wondering if they added campaigns like the first games had in this franchise?
Just read a review of this (granted, written when the game was released), saying that one of the big negatives was that it doesn't have a campaign to speak of.
Edit: And bought. It's been on my wishlist forever (I think solely bc of the zombie mod). Now I need to find 40 gig of drive space somewhere.

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
It came with a couple of DLCs. I don't have cable so it took like 16+ hours to download. Just finished so I haven't even had time to look at it yet. Also had to free up some room.

Awwww crap. The DayZ mod was for ARMA II?! Boooo! I think that was the only reason I had this on my wishlist, bc it looks like there is no single player component to speak of (and not interested in MP).

It was added later, and was patched significantly. As mentioned, Tac-Ops and Contact also have single player campaigns. And I was told to also grab Apex, as there are scads of developer-quality single player missions and campaigns on the Steam Workshop for it. And some of the other DLC have single player elements as well, some (Tanks) have campaigns, others just standalone missions (I think Helicopters and Marksmen.) Cold War Germany has a campaign, Prairie Fire has single player missions.
And as for DayZ, the ArmA 2 Complete Edition is only eight bucks. Link
As for what has what and how it aged, I just watched this documentary, which I thought was excellent:

I didn't realize the version I got was multiplayer so I had to get the Apex DLC which looks to have a lot of single player.
Which is on sale now too.

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
I remember playing the first Operation Flashpoint that came out, and while it was fugly, even for the time, I was blown away by the immersiveness. I don't remember if it was the AI, or the randomness generator or what, but there was an early mission where you (one dude) had to ambush a convoy that was going to pass through a road below you on a hill. IIRC you had to set bombs, and maybe snipe them? So long ago, don't remember, but for a game that wasn't really in my typical wheelhouse, I was impressed by how many different ways that very difficult mission could turn out. The programming made it seem like it truly had infinite outcomes depending on how you acted (or didn't).
Oh, you set off the explosives too soon? Now there are craters in the road, and the trucks might either stop, or try to roll over them slowly. Or maybe quite a few soldiers get out of the truck. Or they spot you and it's on. Or they see the explosives. Or.... It was amazing.

Yes. Finishing the original OpFlash is still in my Top 10 gaming moments of all time. Finishing that last mission was epic!
I have played random ArmA games since then and I never enjoy them for some reason. I put ArmA 3 on my wishlist but I just don't know if it's worth it for me (even at $6).

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
That video goes into quite a bit of detail, but Arma is, essentially, the continuation of the Operation Flashpoint property. Codemasters (the publisher) and Bohemia Interactive (the developer) split ways, but Codemasters ended up with the IP. They tried to build it with Dragon Rising, failed, and haven't touched it since, and not one person involved with Operation Flashpoint was involved in Dragon Rising. The people who made OpFlash just changed the name of the games to Armed Assault (nicknamed ArmA, after which they just kept the nickname as Arma), and the bigger franchise was born.
FYI, the original Operation Flasphoint campaign has since been re-released as ArmA: Cold War Assault.
And for what it's worth, the entire Operation: Flashppoint Cold War Crisis campaign has been recreated entirely within ArmaA 3.

I downloaded the mods (and the dependents) and when I started it, I can see the new logo and start screen for CWR, but I can't figure out how to actually start the damn thing! Obviously not a big modder. When I click CAMPAIGN (or really anything at the top), I still just see the default missions, nothing from Op FP.

Nope. I only know it exists because I just found it and picked it up during this sale, too. I've yet to actually try.

Re: Steam's Deals of the Day/Weekend/Midweek
Black Mesa is 5 freaking dollars. I’m close to finishing and it’s easily worth $20 IMO. Just an amazing job done with this. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
Side note: I stopped playing a couple months ago (working too many hours) at about 75% through, but now I have time to pick up where I left off:
Noticed a patch for it in my Steam downloads page yesterday, and clicked start. Only then did I read what the patch was, and it said in big letters NOTE THIS THIS BREAKS SAVES!!
Aaaaaaarghhhh!!!
Felt like I had been sucker punched.
However, when I loaded up the game to see if my 12+ precious hours of play time were really lost, sure enough there was no LOAD option being shown on startup per usual, but I noticed that you could now apparently start at any chapter! Brilliant! Just another little touch that these guys have thought of for this obvious labor of love.

FWIW, War Wind has been freely available from GOG.com since June 3, 2020. Also, it's more of a science fantasy classic RTS akin to WarCraft II than anything I would describe as a war game.
