I loved their appearance on the late, great Doom Patrol, so I’m in. I just wish Netflix had kept Lockwood and Co.. I enjoyed that show as well.

The concept is pretty much what it looks like - two dead kids who are detectives. It was originally a DC (Sandman) comic written by Neil Gaiman, and the show started as a spin-off of Doom Patrol. If you haven't seen Doom Patrol, just consider that it was a show based on a comic (that was originally a copy of X-Men) that included a woman with 64 personalities (each with a different superpower), a robot with a human brain, a human with a robot brain (sort of), as well as others as main characters, and a sentient street as a recurring character. Oh, and don't forget were-butts.

So, the concept is simple, but where they take it is anyone's guess.

Yep that sounds totally simple. And I know of Doom Patrol. I was happy to see Brendan Fraser getting work back when it came out.

It's the other way around.

First appearance of X-Men: September 1963
First appearance of Doom Patrol: June 1963

But you already knew this.

Yep. They ripped off X-Men by beating them to the press by three months. ;)

Given the time it takes to launch a new book, there's every likelihood that they were one of those coincidences of simultaneous development. Neither existed when the other was created, unless someone behind the scenes leaked it one way or the other (and there's be no way to know which way such a leak went.)

Just like Man-Thing and Swamp Thing.

Sometimes the universe just works in mysterious ways.

I really only know the Dead Boy Detectives from their appearance in The Sandman and then their spinoff comics. I was surprised to see them on the HBO Doom Patrol series, but that wasn't unusual - pretty much every episode was non-stop surprise.

I would kill for a decent Man-Thing show. We already had a pretty good Swamp Thing tv show on DC Universe...until it got unceremoniously canned.

But I would imagine a mute, unthinking swamp creature is a harder story to write when it's not supposed to be the villain...much.

I thought it worked well (recently) in:
Spoiler:
Werewolf by Night
Not sure if that's spoiler-worthy, but I really enjoyed that limited run show. I was kinda hoping it would kick off some additional stuff but I'm guessing it was part of the "restructuring" after overload shuffle.

I've never read a single issue of Doom Patrol, and only a few issues of X-Men (and most of those scattered into other storylines.)

In other words, my memory sucks.

Just a quick bump to remind you that it was released today. It's 8 episodes and each is about an hour.

I watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. I was miffed they recast the actors initially, but the new ones are quite good after all.

But I will always hear Cliff calling Edwin “Judge Harry Potter” in my head…

Edit: 2 episodes in and it just gets better. It’s got the absurdity of Doom Patrol mixed with the world building of Sandman. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Death from the aforementioned Sandman make an appearance. I’ve always appreciated Gaiman’s take on the character. A being of kindness and compassion instead of the usual depiction full of fear and dread.

Edit 2: I just realized that
Spoiler:
The Night Nurse is in the show. We’ve got a tie in to Hellblazer now.
Edit 3: 3rd episode was great fun. The show is reminding me more and more of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but with more humor and a larger group of characters I really like and not just tolerate. It can also be surprisingly creepy.

Edit 4: I want a Cat King spinoff.

And finished. Honestly, this was up there with Doom Patrol and Sandman in terms of quality. I can’t recommend it enough. The cast has Buffy and Angel levels of chemistry. They were just fantastic.

Finished it last night and we both loved it.

My wife didn't remember them in Doom Patrol so I showed her and she thinks the new actors are much better.
Here's hoping for a new franchise with multiple seasons.
