Trump: One of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, Well, sir, if we don't pay and were attacked by Russia, will you protect us? I said.. No I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want.
Once again, the idea that he's a presumptive candidate is simultaneously depressing and frightening. America is not well.

I’d agree it’s a lie because usually he’d name the person who said it had they actually done it.
This has been a consistent complaint of many presidents though albeit none had used trumps language.
Be interesting to see where a nato without the Us would go. Without European bases Us force projection into the Middle East would fail.
What would happen to Diego Garcia and Ramstein?
In theory Britain, France and Germany should be able to see off Russia themselves provided they can work together.

The US receives the exact same amount of dollars whether NATO members meet their NATO obligations on defense spending or not. Zero. Using this for political purposes is misleading at best, dishonest at worst. And since it's drumpf, assume the worst.

I don't think so. Pretty sure I read that all members except Finland are now spending at least 2% of GDP and many are over that. They started reluctantly raising their budgets in response to trump's bombast and really stepped up their games when Putin invaded Ukraine. Finland will be in compliance by 2026.

Yes - much of the 800 billion spent on defence by the Us does not go on defense for nato but other operations while most budget by small nations goes to their own defense.
And the only NATO member ever attacked on the history of the alliance was the US and thus all nato members sent troops to Afghanistan something those nations didn’t have to cos the US wasn’t paying the bills to send those troops were they?
Yes Denmark “only” sent 2000 troops as the magats like to point out but how many per capita did a small Us state send? The Canadian Armed Forces had the highest per-capita casualty rate among coalition members. I can’t recall their pm saying America only gets help if it buys more of our stuff.
And as others have pointed out it’s a bit rich of the orange one to complain people aren’t paying their bills (and they aren’t even bills).
I think it’s clear most European nations need to spend more on their own defence. Even if the Us was not there. As the head British general said the other day we are in our generations 1937 moment and we need to consider building the army to be prepared for when Ukraine falls.
Personally trump is a fool though. We have so much surplus stuff we could give like old Bradley’s etc to help build up those forces but it needs to be about friendship not about being a mob boss.

It's funny how the Right has to criticize Obama for stupid things like a tan suit or whether he had a U.S. flag on his lapel and the Left has to pretend that these are the only things Obama can be criticized for, because to acknowledge things like the murder of hundreds of civilians, including Americans, via drone bombs or the overthrow of governments would indict just about every President since the removal of Queen Lili'uokalani*.
