Don't you have like 4 manned quarries?
He can only use 2 of them on the market, combined with the 2 doubloons doesn't cover the cost.

Ah. I did not know that. So why would anyone acquire more than 2 quarries?

Though in any event my question was more about why the small sugar market was going to cost 1 doubloon when it should be 0 with the quarries, which I think still applies.

Though I'm not sure why I'm asking why Nick is spending more than he should. I guess it's just because El Guapo the governor just cares so much about his people.

edit: ah, I see!
Quarry
Each occupied quarry that a player owns may reduce the player’s cost for building
a building by 1 doubloon. The limit for such reductions is shown on the game
board: players building buildings in the first column can reduce their cost by at
most 1 doubloon (1 occupied quarry), in the second column by 2 doubloons (2
occupied quarries), in the third column by 3 doubloons (3 occupied quarries), and in
the fourth column by 4 doubloons (4 occupied quarries).
Hence he can only reduce the sugar mill cost by 1 since it's in the first column (and the large market by 2 since it's in the second column).

Good to read the rules, I suppose.

El Guapo wrote:Ah. I did not know that. So why would anyone acquire more than 2 quarries?
Because the 3rd column of buildings allows you to use 3 quarries. I don't see the value for 4 quarries though.
El Guapo wrote:Though in any event my question was more about why the small sugar market was going to cost 1 doubloon when it should be 0 with the quarries, which I think still applies.
The small sugar mill costs 2 doubloons or 1 doubloon and 1 quarry. The small market costs 1 doubloon or free with 1 quarry.

Unfortunately, you're only allowed to have one of any given type of building, and you already have a small sugar mill.

Just wanted to update you guys on the startling results of some independent scientific research that I have reviewed. Previously I mentioned that independent science has indicated that tobacco use is associated with health and long life. More recent studies, however, have indicated that this strong health benefit is actually connected to tobacco produced on La Isla Guapa. Early results suggest that this is due to the superior climate and tropical breezes uniquely available on that island, which when smoked impart extra oxygen and vitamins into your T zone.

By contrast, studies indicate that tobacco grown on other islands lacks that health benefit entirely, and actually (if you can believe this) is connected to an elevated risk of cancer.

Just wanted to pass along those independent findings, so that everyone can make healthy choices.

Captain with 1 doubloon + 1 VP privilege.

Ship 3 indigo on ship #7 (3 VP + 1 Harbor VP). Ship 2 coffee on ship #8 after Nick loads his 2 coffee first (2 VP + 1 Harbor VP). Ship 2 sugar via my wharf (2 VP + 1 Harbor VP)

Cargo Ship #8: coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, _____, _____, _____, _____,

I go next, and I'll load one tobacco onto ship #6, for 2 VPs (1 + 1 harbor). Ship #6 fills and is off to provide the Old World with the smooth, rich, T-zone enhancing flavor of La Isla Guapa tobacco.

Yup. It's a long voyage thanks to El Guapo forcing us to use antiquated shipping technology.

Ok, now that I'm back from lunch, let's see how the rest of this goes.

So I believe during the craftsman phase Remus produced 4 indigo (+1 on his windrose), 1 corn (Grund's summary shows an unmanned corn farm on Remus' board - is that right?), and 1 sugar, +3 doubloons from his specialty factory.

Remus has to ship 4 indigo for 4 VPs, filling boat #7. Remus can also use his royal supplier to ship 1 indigo, 1 corn, and/or 1 sugar for up to 3 VPs.

Then it's Nick's turn, he ships 2 coffee for 2 VPs (2 spots left)

Then Vorret's turn, he has 3 indigo, 2 tobacco and 4 corn but can't ship any of it, so 8 cubes get wasted. He can choose to retain 1 indigo, 1 tobacco or 1 corn. Again the children weep.

Morliere then ships 2 coffee on ship #8 for 2 VPs, filling it up. His 2 sugar gets shipped via wharf for 2 VPs.

All the boats are full. I have 1 tobacco, 2 sugar, 1 indigo, 1 corn. I have a manned storehouse so can store 4 goods. I'll let the corn rot and then have a servant throw it through a window of Moliere's house, and retain 1 tobacco, 2 sugar, and 1 indigo.

Total: Moliere +11 VPs ( ), El Guapo +2 VPs, Nick +2 VPs, Vorret +0 VPs (that craftsman phase may have been ill-advised), and Remus +7 VPs (assuming he maxes his royal supplier sales). We'll also have three empty boats during the next turn phase.

Remus needs to make his royal supplier choice, Vorret needs to decide what to retain. Then Grund can do his summary. Then with the people wisely re-electing the most popular sitting governor in history, I can make the first choice of the next turn.

I do not believe you can take an Indigo as your extra as there will be none left to choose after everyone produces (which is when you get to pick you extra).

On Craftsman I produce 4 Indigo, 1 Sugar, 1 Corn, and 3 Doubloons.

edit: Looking back, maybe not. There may not be enough Indigo for me to produce all 4 I could. Working it out now.

edit again: unless I figured wrong I do not get the above. Full craftsman lay out below.

Ultimately that doesn't matter since he can't ship any of them anyway, so he'll still be left with the 1 tobacco.

Working it out this is what happens on Craftsman (numbers in parenthesis are remaining crates in stock after production):
Vorret produces:
2 Indigo (7)
2 Tobacco (2)
4 Corn (6)

Moliere produces:
3 Indigo (4)
1 Sugar (8)
2 Coffee (3)

El Hated produces:
2 Tobacco (0)
1 Indigo (3)
2 Sugar (6)

Remus West produces:
3 Indigo (0)
1 Sugar (5)
1 Corn (5)
2 Doubloons from the factory

Nick produces:
1 Sugar (4)
2 Coffee (1)

Vorret gains 1 Corn from privilege as there is no Indigo or Tobacco available.

As for Shipping:
I believe it goes like this based on folks statements above.

Moliere chooses Captain.

Moliere begins by placing 3 Indigo on ship #7 4 slots remaining. 5 VP (3 + 1 privilege +1 Harbor)
El Guapo ships 1 Tobacco on Ship #6 for 2 VP (1 +1 harbor)
Remus West ships 1 Indigo, 1 Sugar, 1 Corn through his Royal Supplier for 3 VP.
Remus West ships 3 Indigo on ship #7 1 slots remain. 3 VP.
Nick ships 2 coffee on ship #8 for 2 VP. 2 slots remain empty.
Vorret ships 1 Indigo on ship #7. Filling it. 1 VP.
Moliere ships 2 Coffee filling the final boat. 3 VP (2 +1 Harbor).
Moliere ships 2 Sugar via his Wharf for 3 VP (2 + Harbor).

Ships are sent to the old world.

Well, I did catch that I did not get as much Indigo as you thought which also meant 1 less Doubloon. You're welcome. :(
