Yeah, really weird. 10 hours vs. 30 hours is like two-thirds of the game! And the Forbes reviewer is an experienced gamer. He's bound to know Deus Ex games are all about exploration, twisting plots, side missions, etc. It sounds like he played with that in mind (and the Gaming Trend guy too).

Maybe I'm just looking for a conspiracy here. It could be a bug, right?

Cross posted here as a warning: The PC controls have a number of really big annoyances.

Biggest example is that loading a save requires you to hit spacebar to get past the loading screen. However, that same input is used to vault out of cover or dash to some other position, and that Spacebar input is accepted once in game, so the first thing you do after loading is jump out of whatever cover you were in.

Having done game QA work, there's no way this made it past QA and it's just a stupid thing. So be careful where you quicksave, don't position your self and view in a position where pressing spacebar would put you in a deadly situation.

I played about an hour and a half, so I'm about halfway done with the game.

Anyway, not much to report. I've just played through the intro stuff and just got out of my apartment into the open world... so just a tease over lunch really.

I played with an xbox 360 controller and everything worked well, but I am thinking of switching to mouse/kb... I don't plan on running and gunning, but I just think the keyboard might feel better.

Shady B.S. - "consumable" DLC (even preorder bonus items) are one-time-use. Period.

It won't show up again if you claim it in one game and then start a new game.

ed - The only one I really care about is the Praxis module, but it's still complete bullshit to do that at all. I expect a HUGE rating/review backlash. Possibly bigger than the backlash about that space game that No Man Shall name. (triple secret ed-better hiding the caps. :p)

ed2 - guess I should read the whole thread. But who does that?

I'm still on my trip, so I can't check this out. I did pre-order, so I'm guessing I need to save right away and keep that save? Sounds complicated. Thankfully, I got the game 25% off on my pre-order, so if this bonus stuff is screwed up, I'll still be OK.

Just took a quick break from No Mans Sky to get my first save in on Deus Ex.
(hmmmm. two triple AAA games purchased on Day 1, in a row)

Wow, I forgot how much I loved the golden world of Deus Ex. I can't wait to get back in for real. One of the cool things they did with this game was give a 10 min recap of the prior game. Plot wise, I probably remembered maybe 20% of the plot and about 60% of the locations. But I do remember the golden texture of the world. I didn't think it would work for me in the prior game because the first Deus Ex game seemed to have a blue tilt IIRC.

Steam tells me I have 7 hours in. I finally went to bed around 12:30 am. I've had a lot of fun with it so far, but I grow tired of the hacking mini-game. I am playing pretty stealthy as I suspect most people do in these games. I haven't shot a gun since the first half hour in the intro (if you exclude the shooting range shooting tutorial). I've been carrying around a tranq rifle, but I haven't actually used it. Man that thing takes up some serious inventory space. I ought to stash that back home.

For all the options to do stuff, I sure still spend a lot of time crawling through vents... just now sometimes I have to pick up a vending machine or copier to access the vent or possibly punch through a ridiculously obvious spot in the wall to get into the crawlspace.

My points have gone jumpy legs, punchy fists, errrr... talky mouth and lots of hacking. I'm kind of tired of the hacking. It makes me want to shoot people.

If you hate Stealth games I am guessing the Dues Ex games are not for that person, IE - Me?

I think I bought one of these games in the past, but couldn't get into it if I recall.

If you played and didn't find any enjoyment in Human Revolution, I am not sure there is anything for you here.

I think the game gives you the tools to kill everyone instead of sneaking around, but I've never tried it.

I don't mind some sneaking, but total sneaking is not my thing. Is it like those Thief games(I think that is what they were called) back in the day? Everything was sneaky sneaky and kill from behind...

I play it a lot like the Thief games, but you can go in guns blazing. The 10mm pistol on Full Auto is something to behold. There are also shotguns, assault rifles, revolvers and Jensen has a blade built into his arm. There are health and armor upgrades... and if you want to get by without killing, but don't want to slink around there is a full invisibility upgrade.

LIke I said I think stealth is optional, but it feels like that's the right way to play it to me, but that might be because that's how I have always played Deus Ex. I think it was a dart gun with tranq ammo in the first game.

You can play it full bore FPS if you want, just upgrade your weapons and focus on combat augs. But sneaking and hacking are more fun :D

So you can do a combo though? Some FPS, some stealth. I like Hacking, but my ability to slink through vent shafts for a whole game, and time walking so the guard's back is turned bug me.

You can do everything, you just won't be the best at everything.... I assume. No idea how many skills you can unlock by end game. I have more points than I have found a use for so far, but part of that is because I am not running and gunning.

There's an app article for that: PC Gamer's Augmentation Guide
Adam Jensen is a man-shaped Swiss Army knife. There are 28 augmentations hidden inside his body—including seven new ones for Mankind Divided—and your play style will be determined by the ones you choose to activate and upgrade. So here’s a list of every single one, with details about what they do, other augs you can cleverly combo them with, and if they’re worth spending your precious Praxis points on.

You should get the Glass stealth aug then. It makes you invisible, so you can basically walk in front of the baddies (provided you do so quietly and have the energy).

Can you do everything though? With the overclock system you have to shut down some augs to open up other augs. So I had to disable (and the game says permanently) my arm knives so that I could purchase the tesla arc stun system (I go non-lethal).

removes
the limits and you should already have it unless you said no.

There's way more options for all styles of play now. I haven't tried the shooter route because I love stealth, but I see the tools are there.

There's a lot more weapon customization, and several augs are much more useful for direct confrontation. Their push for aggressive stealth also works, as you now have multiple routes for stealthy and nonlethal takedowns that use difference resources, allowing you to chain them. The stun gun, for example, is no longer purely melee ranged and is a single shot pistol system, you have the melee takedown as well, and the tesla dart aug to help knock out multiple enemies rapidly. The Typhoon system can be switched to a gas distribution system, good for knocking out groups if you get surrounded instead of just killing everyone.

I always love the non lethal route of things. But in this game do the guys stunned or drugged ever wake up? It bugs me in stealth games when the guys you stun or put to sleep remain that way. It would be much cooler if there was some kind of countdown clock for their nappy nap time.

The last unions were busted 10 years prior, so any napping guard is immediately fired and escorted from the building. :D

It's stated in the tips, but knocked out/sleeping guards will never wake up unless they are woken up by someone else that finds them. So if you clear an area or hide the bodies, you won't have to worry about the guards coming back to haunt you.

However, because of the new tools, you can play nonlethal and still get through areas quickly enough that it won't matter.

Yeah I like to knock out a guy, leave him out as bait for his friends so I can K.O. them too.

Just had a fun one, Two friends came for the downed guy, did a double knockout on them just as he was barely waking up. Had to wait a sec for the recharge and he starts saying "Did anybody see what happ..." ka-blam! Sucka! He probably has some serious injuries after being knocked out twice in two minutes.

Is there no targeting cursor in third person? I find it extremely difficult to aim in third person. I certainly don't remember the last game being that difficult. Though maybe this is to provide incentive to upgrade my weapon with a laser targeting device? Anyway, it's annoying right now.

It's a white dot (playing PC) that is not that easy to see. I generally use iron sights and very, very rarely shoot anything so it hasn't been a problem for me. There might be an option for a bigger targeting indicator or maybe the laser sight changes it? I found a laser sight this morning but haven't attached it to my stun gun (only weapon I use) yet.

Well when you are shooting from behind cover, you can only shoot third person (at least that's all I can see to do, did I miss something?) I prefer iron sights also but can't figure out how to do it from cover.

Ok, so Steam says it has an update queued but Steamwon't let me start the game in the meantime - I keep getting an error message. Is there any way for me to start this game?

Never mind, switching to Montreal, CA worked while the server in my hometown didn't!

Be sure to do two things in Adam's apartment:

First, sit down and watch the news. Yes, you can actually sit down and watch the TV.

Secondly, this is very easy to miss but in the floor of Adam's bedroom is a small stash. I watched some gameplay videos and I haven't seen anyone mention that yet, and unless you actually look at the floor, you'll totally miss it.

I shoot with iron sights from cover all the time (using RMB and firing the tranq rifle). Be aware, however, you leave cover while aiming and they will see you.

I had switched from Miami to Atlanta to Charlotte to Washington DC. No luck. Saw your post, switched to Anchorage... And so far it's working . At least it's been creating local game cache files for ten minutes. Maybe once it starts downloading, if it's really slow I'll try switching back to more local servers.

How the heck did you decide to try Anchorage?

I had to switch to Montreal to get the patch to download.

Yesterday I got into it with the people over at RPS. They published an op-ed about how Adam Jensen is basically "just there" and his motivations are unclear to the point that it does not drive the story. The only problem is, the writer had only played 7 hours of the game, most of it he admitted was just tooling around and not doing the story! What a strange op-ed - commenting on the character not driving the story without actually playing much of the story! I'll be honest, I find their style is starting to become grating. Too often they try to be more clever than informative and succeed in being neither.

So, two hours into the game and some impressions...

During the Dubai introductory mission, I was reminded of how bad I am at stealth. Still, this being a Deus Ex game, I was able to figure out a way to complete the mission. It really did seem strange for awhile, but I got the hang of it.

The Prague videos were pretty awesome, but I simply cannot keep up with all the names, the organizations and who's on first. Ultimately I decided that it really didn't matter, I'd pick it up as I went along.

And then I watched the twelve minute video that was supposed to catch me up on what happened in Human Revolution. I swear I played that game all the way through, but I have very little recollection of the events shown in the video. Oh well, I can't remember the names of my nieces and nephews either, so it doesn't worry me.

The game runs pretty nice on my rig. The Steam frame counter shows me in the upper forties to low fifties most of the time and there is no stuttering. So right now I'm still happy with the purchase.

Just finished the game. 28 hours played. 10 Praxis Kits unspent (3 purchased with the ridiculous extra money I had, 1 from pre-order). 100% sneaky hacker play-through. Maybe 6 shots fired the entire game (stun gun/tranq gun). Only 1 kill in the entire game (I think).

Unlocked New Game+ and a new difficulty level (permadeath!).

I enjoyed the game all the way through. I did check spoilers to find 3 of the side missions that I had missed, otherwise it was all me.

There is a Marvel-esque mid-credits scene.... also wow do the credits roll for a LONG time.

Many surprises in the game. I would be tempted to play through again right away, but I just started Dragon's Dogma last week and it's calling to me. :D

Just getting started, the end of the Dubai mission threw me for a while since I'm all about stealth. Finally figured it out.

I ran into a weird glitch, at least it seems to be one. I looted a container and then got stuck with a big "0/8 slots remaining message" on the bottom left of my screen. I couldn't move, couldn't do anything! Has anyone seen this? I had to reload from my last save and when I looted that container again it didn't happen.
