Scarlett could easily have gone ahead with the role and gotten her paycheck. The filmmakers would have gotten theirs too, although perhaps with smaller box-office returns.

Making commercial art is an attempt to appeal to an audience. The audience for a movie about a trans character is very likely to have opinions about the representation of trans characters. (I kind of doubt the MAGA crowd was buying tickets in advance for this one.)

This isn't oppression by any stretch of imagination. No one stopped them from doing what they wanted. Instead, it became clear that they weren't going to get a warm buy-in from relevant tastemakers. That's something they surely wanted, but it's not something they can claim to have a right to.

In the wake of Scarlett Johansson bowing out of the project earlier this week, it looks like the proposed biopic “Rub and Tug” has also been shelved.

The outlet says Sanders is still attached to direct, but without Johansson’s involvement it’s likely not enough to move forward and confirms – whether one likes it or not – her name was the only selling factor of the project rather than the story itself.
