I listen to music just about any chance I get, so I pretty much always have some song in my head. The most common thing is for me to get hung up on whatever song was playing when I got out of my car at work, and it will be stuck in my head until I get back in the car and finish it during the drive home. Either that, or I end up with something I really can't stand because I was stuck listening to it during my workday...an unfortunate time where I'm very rarely the one who gets to pick the background music despite often being in an OR listening to music for 8+ hours a day.

The standard pop radio stations are torture if you have to stick with the same one all day because all they do is repeat the same songs and artists on a 45-60 minute loop. I know more generic current pop music than I care to admit simply because it's pounded into my head over and over. Painful...

You're at least the third person (including myself) to say that the most common cause is not finishing listening to a song. That suggests (to me, and my very, extremely, utterly limited knowledge of neurology) that your brain is probably trying to complete an established neural pathway/pattern that was started, but never completed.

Now I'm curious enough to see if there has been a study...

That's always been my earworm cure. Just listen to it and that's usually enough to get it out of my system.

My cure is to turn on the TV. I've already forgotten this morning's song. That didn't work when I had to go to work every morning because the song would endure through my morning grooming and then I was screwed.

The worst is when you have one stuck in your head, but you can't remember what it is. I have one right now. I almost have the words, but not quite. I do have the tune. But I can't go and listen to it, because all I know is that it's on a playlist I have with several hundred songs.

ZZTop "Gimmie All Your Lovin" Cant remember the last time I heart that song. I really shouldn't acknowledge it. Now it's going to be stuck.

Mine this morning was “Calliandra’s Shade” by Ian Anderson. Doubt I’ve heard that song or album in over a decade, but it just randomly popped in.

At least it’s one I like.

It's situational. Too Drunk to Fuck by the Dead Kennedys (50% of the time). Too Old to Rock'n'Roll, Too Young to Die by Jethro Tull (pretty much always). Impressively Average by Bridgette Calls me Baby because it's the most awesome new song I've heard in a long time.

I officially hate this thread. "Invincible" by Pat Benatar. I don't think I've cared for that song.

This one gets me from time to time (along with California Uber Alles, or, oddly enough, A Child and His Lawnmower.)

But not today.

Today I woke up with none other than Viva Las Vegas spinning around in my thinker.

The more I see this thread, the more I realize that, contrary to what I said earlier, I do have a song playing in my head just about all the time. I guess I never realized it before.

Or maybe seeing this thread makes music pop in my head?

Lately, it's been The Last Thing by Lebanon Hanover (and I'm listening to it with headphones now). Love it, but perhaps not the healthiest song to put on repeat.

"It's a Little Bit Me" The Monkees. My brain settled on this after a few songs it false started and I couldn't put the medley or rif to a song.

My first year away at college my roommate had the XTC Greatest Hits cassette and we listened to it incessantly. Any track off that and I'm instantly transported back to 1995.

Love that song, love that band. I saw them on what I think was their last North American tour when they opened for The Police.

I have an unintentional mashup stuck in my head this morning. My brain keeps starting with the intro to Finnegan's Wake by Dropkick Murphys, then jumping to the chorus of The Night that Patty Murphy Died by Great Big Sea.
