Please help me pick a class/race for WoW.
Here's what I want:
* Something fun.
* Something not too repetitive.
* Something pleasing to look at.
* Something with the coolest looking weapons/armor/magic.
* A race where I will not get lost so easily.
Thanks, I appreciate all the help I can get. I'm experienced with MMO's, but WoW has me befuddled.

Druids get a lot of cool powers, like shapeshifting, a lot of unique quests (not sure if it's more or less than the other classes), two ways to approach each fight (brute force in animal form, or spellcasting in Night Elf/Tauren form), and get a spell at level 10 that lets them teleport back to their secret underground lair whenever they want.

I would recommend a tauren hunter. They look cool. They get to use firearms. Hunters are by all accounts a fun class to play. They get funky pets. You can melee or fight from range. You can solo effectively with your pet, or serve a valued role as "puller" in a group.
Note that I have not played a tauren, or a hunter.
Some ubergeeks who were competing with me over a camp (and would not let me join them) were remarking last night that this is the first game of the type to have human female models which are pleasing to the eye. I suppose that's true if one is into cartoon women (some folks are).
At any rate if that floats your boat you'll get lots of group invitations from 14 year olds who think you're hot, whatever class you play.

I think the females are ugly personally. They all have hands and legs the size of oil tankers. Ewwww. When I said aethetcially leasing, I meant that they look cool, whether male or female. I don't like the female dwarves and females gnomes the most. Talk about falling out of the ugly tree.
Do Druids get to use swords and armor? I really like how the guard Knights look for the human-alliance-city-place-area.

I love my Gnome Rogue, who I have dubbed the nickname of Ginsu. He isn't too big on equipment, but meets all of your other criteria.

I'm not sure what the Druid has, but my sneak doesn't turn off unless:jpinard wrote:This is probably another stupid question. The sneaking that a rogue can do... Is it different than the sneak my Druid has? Ironically everytime I do that shadowmeld spell, as soon as I walk it turns off. grrr.
a) I turn it off
b) An enemy sees me and attacks me (read: I stand right in front of an enemy)
c) I attack an enemy.

Druid sneak, as far as I know, comes from a shapeshifting ability. You won't get it for a while.
Shadowmeld is (You heathen, you never played WC3, did you?) a Night Elf ability. It lets them hide as long as they don't move. Not the most useful thing, but I can see how it'd be nice for PVP or something.

If I had a sig, would you read it?
Undead Rogue here. All the advantages of rogues, plus I'm undead so I look cool and can be imune to fear when I need it and can breathe under water a lot better than every other race.
I think Orc Warriors look the coolest, which is what I played as my main in beta. I'm not happy with where they currently stand as far as fun and usability go, but I've got one made that I use as a mule right now. Hopefully I'll get to use him as a real character. I named him Hodor.
Shamans also rule and should not be excluded.

I have an Orc hunter and I've got to agree, they are a great class (Although Tauren - Blah! ). If you like to solo, then this is your class. I've tried Mage, Priest, Rogue also, all have been great and varied.Tareeq wrote:I would recommend a tauren hunter. They look cool. They get to use firearms. Tauren hunters are fine. I play one and it is mucho fun. The reason I took one vs. an orc hunter is that I wanted to start with the gun skll (orc hunter starts wtih bow I think) and that hoof-smashy-on-ground power that Tauren get.
Orc pets, however, do an extra 5% damage, which is groovy too. Plus I think the Orc starting area is a bit friendlier than the Tauren equivalent (I played an orc during beta,) but I think I may be in the minority on that one.

He's just kidding. I'm playing a Tauren Hunter and having a blast. There's not a whole lot of differences between the Orc and Tauren Hunter, so just pick whichever one you like better from an appearance standpoint. The big differences between the two are:jpinard wrote:Funny, I had not even considered an "Orc" hunter. So Tauren Hunter is bad, or are you just kidding?
* Orcs start with bows. Taurens start with guns. (guns!)
* Orcs get a 5% boost to pet melee damage, 25% resistance to stun and knockout effects, and a +5 to axe skill. Tauren get War Stomp (an AoE stun), Endurance (Max Health increased by 5%), and Nature Resistance (All Tauren get +10 Nature Resistance)
In the end, everything ends up having it's advantages and disadvantages. I use War Stomp a lot during fights with two or more mobs.
But what really settled it for me is that I just couldn't stand the orc models. I really would've preferred to be an undead hunter, but the option doesn't exist.

Coming from DAoC and CoH, WoW is the best solo MMORPG ever. You could likely get to a fairly high level without ever having to group or grind. It's pretty nice like that. 3 hours/week will likely get you 3 levels/week, easily.SuperHiro wrote:Worth it for three hours a week? As far as playing with us... it's basically like IRC but with stuff to do at the same time. We may or may not be playing together, but the guildchat is always entertaining. The higher level guys will also help lower level guys out with quests and the like. Last night Orpheo helped me finish out a quest that he already did. That was after Jason, Orpheo, and I went on TEH MAGICAL ADVENTSHURE (tm) to Horde territory to do one quest. Shortly after that, Samurai and I did a quest together. Sometime earlier last week, Sam and I went to escort Roning's tiny low level ass from Gnome/Dwarfland to join us in Nightelfville so he could hang.
If you have the hankering for an MMORPG, this is definitely the one to get for the casual gamer.
And as far as the #gg guild goes... if you're looking for a big, "mature" group of gamers who take anything remotely close to seriously, look elsewhere.

Jp.. I played every race and every class in the beta. Took all characters to at least 10th lvl to get a feel for them.
My favorite char by far, based on it's sheer versatility, is the Shaman. I got an orc shaman up to 31st in beta and now to 22nd in retail. The shaman has excellent ranged nukes, a couple of DoT's, can heal (other chars and your own) and buff (tho buffs are thru the use of totems, which are cool in and of themselves). Finally, he's more than an above average melee char. Also, at 20th lvl, you get Ghost Wolf, which is like a shape change that gives you a 40% speed increase. There's nothing cooler than a group of 4 or 5 shamans running in wolf form. When you're ready for a change from Fearme... try either an orc or tauren shaman and enjoy. Rick

That's got to be the most frustrating part of CoH. I love the game to bits. I have a whole bunch of screenshots that i refuse to delete because I have so much fond memories.jpinard wrote:Yea I was disappinted the GG guild died on CoH. But SuperHiro, you can level soooooooo much faster in WoW, and unlike CoH, it gets better as you level and not more stale.
I'm keeping my CoH account until City of Villians comes out, but if they delay CoV, I'll be canceling.
But I just got so sick of two things.
1) Teaming up with random teams. God that was irritating.
2) Leveling up was taking way way too long. There's no items, and all "prestige stuff" is all level based. So really all you had to look forward to was the level up and get some new powers. This only happened ever other level. Like Bruce/Mark/Tom said in their WoW blog on Gamespy(which is excellent by the way), it's no fun playing for a few hours just to get a few blips on the bubble.
3) Task Forces were too long. Frankly, I don't care about "planning ahead and doing them a piece at a time". Who does that? I mean really? 6 hours is too much for my old eyes and bum.
Early CoH is great for the casual gamer, good progress is made, and the powers come quick. But once you hit the 20's it just becomes a drag. I've always been light on the role-playing.
I understand WoW has a few several hour "instanced stuff"... does a casual gamer stand a good chance of getting stuff done well into his high levels? If I do play I'll probably be in that Well-rested state a lot. Assume I can only play two hours over the weekend.

You don't have to do instances. The guys that have raced to level 60 already got there without doing any instances (at least none of the high level ones). Instances can definitely take a long time if you're of insufficient level.
My guild took 5 guys ranging from 16 to 20 or 21 in level through an instance with level 20 elite monsters (elite meaning they got a crapload more hitpoints than a normal version), and it took us 4 hours (and then died on the last guy and couldn't restart). The next time through we were all 20-25 and went through it in maybe 1.5 hours successfully.
Instances are just a fun way to be in a group in a dungeon all to yourselves, and also to make good exp and phat l00t as they say.

SuperHiro - I didn't want to quote your whole post (2 posts ago), bt I have to say I feel the EXACT same way. There are great memories, and screenshots that are funny as snot I don't want to delete either.
But yea, Task Force Missions are just insane... Wayyy too long. And I agree. it's ridiculous spending 5 hours in the game, only to see your bubble go up a very small bit. And on top fo that the new level may not even do anything"new" for you.
Personally WoW is totally worth it for short bursts of time - except the spell affects aren't as cool as CoH. The onyl reasn I'm posting so much about it, is I can't decide on a server I'm indecisive too.

I may be wrong on this, but it seems that Warriors and Priests are a bit underrepresented.SuperHiro wrote:How about Whisperwind? What's the least played class/race on whisperwind?
Don't forget that you can take a well represented class and use your talents and professions to build it into something relatively uncommon, too. For example, I play a pretty cookie cutter Tauren Hunter that uses guns, specializes in engineering so I can make guns and ammo, and concentrates his talents in Marksmanshp. You could be a Tauren Hunter that uses bows, specializes in enchanting and uses all his talent points in Beast Mastery.
