Extraction?

On the radio this morning Mr. news guy was talking about a fight between, "some Latino students and some students of Pakistani extraction. I hadn't heard this word used like this. Didn't ring right but I never was the most best at grammar.

[3]Origin; lineage: of Spanish extraction.

I wasn't aware of that definition.

I've heard that usage many times, but (to me) it sounds a bit old-fashioned and you do not hear it much any more since it is a little affected and wordy.
