PS4 - God of War 2018

Post by Daehawk »

Calling this GoW 2018 because its doing that very stupid thing where they call it the same name as a former one. So up theirs its 2018 to me :)

Also VERY surprised theres not a dedicated thread to this. Seems to be a AAA game and is looking great. Unfortunately to me it seems to center on his brat kid and such. I hate kids in stuff that they dont need to be in ...like this game. It is like taking Die Hard and making a new one about his 10 year old kid and him along for the ride...YEECH!..But thats the way it is. Im going to list a bunch of vids to it and let you guys decide. Maybe it is something you would love. I hope so. Heck maybe even I will sometime.

The WIKI on it
Many years have passed since Kratos took his vengeance against the Olympian gods. Having survived his final encounter with his father Zeus, Kratos is now a single father living with his young son Atreus in the world of the Norse gods, a savage land inhabited by many ferocious monsters and warriors. In order to teach his son how to survive in such a world, Kratos must master the rage that has driven him for many years and embrace his newfound role as a father and mentor. Kratos must also contend with the Norse gods themselves as they are taking precautions against him, due to them being aware of his role in the destruction of Olympus. Over the course of their time together, Atreus learns more about his father's complicated and shady past, while struggling with whether to be like his father or choose to be his own person.

Reviews starting to come out today, and it’s basically 10, 5-Star, 100’s across the board. Looks absolutely incredible.

I've got this pre-ordered. The scores look great, but I'm not reading any of them, because I've also heard several people saying definitely avoid spoilers.

One thing I hate about these early review embargoes is that all the journalists spend a week talking about it, which is all stuff I avoid reading. Then by the time I'm done with the game, it's a pain to go back and find it.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

It looks amazing....except the kid part. Kids ruin everything. If it was that game minus the brat Id think it could be a 10. But hearing that kid fussing in one of the vids and knowing its about him as a big part of the story brings it down to a 4 for me and a not buy.

On the cool factor though its Christopher Judge from Stargate SG-1 who was T'ealc as the guy voicing and motion capturing Kratos here.

The kid didn't ruin the The Last of Us. I figure the new God of War will be similar. It's not a babysitting game, the kid will probably contribute to the fight and you'll probably only need to rescue him a time or two.

While I've played all of the other GoW entries in the series, I'm not sure I would have jumped on this one if it was basically MOTS but in 4K and HDR. However, I am completely stoked for one in this 'open world' format, kid and all. Pre-ordered!

There is no kid in Last of Us. Ellie is like 17. Least I thought she was. Of course Im now old so my age guessing gene is faulty if its more than 20 years outside my own..

Every review I’ve read says that there aren’t any escort missions, and that the kid stays mostly in the background during combat providing support. That doesn’t seem too onerous to me.

I am incredibly tempted by this...get GoW, and the opportunity to stay current on both the Drake and Last of Us stories after loving them on PS3. The rave reviews for GoW are likely going to push me over the edge.

Unfortunately, I just saw a picture of the GoW version of the PS4 Pro. I think that I might actually pay for the game separately rather than have that horrendous thing sitting under my tv. For those who haven't seen it yet...

Argh... those chests locked by the various configurations of three bells are killing me. I managed to get the first one after many tries, so know they are well worth solving. Then ran into two more so far at the Lake of the Nine - one with spikes that retract and one where they spin around a central pole. I'm hoping some upgrade will come up that will somehow help with them... moved on for the moment but haven't left the lake yet. Anyone handle these when you first stumbled across them? Or am I just a victim of my sucky non-microsecond axe throwing skills? :(

There is enough time from the point where you lower the spikes to hit all the glyphs. Just depends on where you stand - find the best position and try try again.
Time the axe return quickly too so you can target the next glyph.
While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

I also had to throw the axe at the farthest bell last. Hit the mechanism to lower the spikes, hit the two closest ones, and then the farthest one I could just squeeze in. If I tried to do the farthest one first, it wasted to much time with the axe coming back to me. It definitely is doable, but frustrating. I think that one is the worst one I have run into yet, if that means anything. Good luck.

Okay, thanks - the same as the first one which seemed to be all about where to stand to minimize motion when moving your aim from one to the next. And I'll try for the farthest away spiked one last. Still think I'm pretty well fooked on the spinning one, though.

I caved a couple days ago and picked up a PS4 Pro and GoW...finally hooked it up and started playing last night (after waiting 30 minutes for a 6GB update to download ).

I've made it past the intro section and stopped just after Kratos leaves his home. I like the changes they've made to combat already, with it being much more deliberate than the chaos of the previous games. The story is off to a very good start, and I can already see the father/son dynamic being interesting as Kratos is forced to develop a relationship with his son that he's clearly avoided up to this point.

And the graphics...holy crap, the graphics. I've been enjoying a few games in 4K HD on my Xbox One X (Destiny 2, Gears of War 4), but I've never seen anything that looks like God of War, and I'm sure this is just a peek of things to come in the game. The level of detail in the characters and environments is incredible. The texture of Kratos' skin, his beard, and the animations...really amazing stuff.

Lucky for me, my wife and kids are away for the weekend, so I'll have plenty more time to play!

30 minutes? I’m jealous. Mine took nearly 90.

The PS4 download speed is just SO damn slow. My WiFi connection is 120 mbps, but I’m lucky if I ever get DL speeds above 1 on my PS4. I’ve tried every fix I can find online, but nothing makes a difference. It’s infuriating.

I think 30 minutes to download and install a 6GB update over wifi is pretty good. I just found it annoying to wait even longer after I had hooked up a brand new PS4 Pro, installed the console update, installed the game, then got another update screen. It might have gone faster with a wired connection, but that's going to my Xbox One and no hub handy.

I beat this recently. It's a very good game. And it definitely starts out tough, but gets easier as you go up level and get more abilities. And yeah, that kid can be pretty damn annoying, but his bow saved my butt many times so I'll forgive him.

I’m playing through this now, and as much as I like this game, I really hate these damn Nornir chests that require you to throw your axe to ring bells in quick succession. My issue is, I cannot see the stupid aiming reticule for the axe because it so often blends in with the background. Did the devs not play test this at all, or are they just having a laugh and fucking with us? It’s almost enough to make me pull the plug on the game. So frustrating. :x

As far as I can remember, there's a way to change the aiming reticule in the settings to make it easier to see. This game actually has some great accessibility options. I was impressed with the wealth of options.

That was the first thing I checked because it seemed like such an obvious setting to let you adjust, but if it's there somewhere, I'm not seeing it. I do love this game - some of the dialogue back and forth between Kratos and his son is classic ("Did you hurt your back?") - but it's a shame it's marred by such an obvious oversight.

I agree, and I think it becomes even worse when you have a smaller screen. Thankfully the game allows you to adjust the text size, because man, the subtitle size is tiny. I thought for sure I remembered there was a setting allowing you to change the look of the reticule, but it's possible I'm remembering a different game. I did love the banter! I also rather liked the banter between the disembodied head of Mimir. Gave me quite a chuckle at times :D

I was actually able to get them all. Of course I used a FAQ to help, but sometimes even the FAQ wasn't very helpful and I had to come up with a better order in which to ring the bells.

I think I got them all, but I can't remember. The worst ones for me were the ones where line of sight was an issue. But they were a bit of a puzzle, part of it being where to position yourself to see all targets.

I know I posted about my adventures in this game in the "what you're playing in the pandemic" thread, but I can pull them here with the thread bumped.

Who knew that the Valkyrie fight at the end of Muspelheim wasn't the end of that realm? You mean I get to do more arenas if I want to "finish" that area for the trophy? Oy.
