When you offend the overlords...

I watched the finale of Master Chef Legends today. It was a really good season, and the final three were pretty incredible. One was of Burmese descent, and her theme in the finale was to call attention to that cultural cuisine.

She tried to make baby octopuses. She over cooked them, and then the sauce was overly reduced and became more of a candied glaze. The overlords were not pleased. She did not win.

Sorry....there's been like no threads on this show ever, I thought I was the only person who watches it (I'm into food porn).

"A symbol of what humans shouldn't be doing," which will make JeffV salivate with glee: The world's first octopus farm is nearing completion.
“From a scientific point of view, this project is a global milestone,” says Roberto Romero Pérez, a marine biologist who oversees aquaculture at Grupo Nueva Pescanova. “The truth is that we’re finding the mood to be a bit more hostile than expected.”

The company’s vision for a farm that could eventually provide up to 3,000 tons of octopus meat a year – requiring the slaughter of about 1 million Octopus vulgaris – came into public view in 2021 when it applied for permits. The planned farm has since become an international flashpoint, pitting the company and other proponents of octopus farming against those who argue that the solitary, intelligent animals are ill-suited to being farmed.

I watch Master Chef but I'm a season behind. I also watch Master Chef Jr., but I think that one I also never saw the most recent season (which was probably before COVID, it's been a while).

That's OK, by the time I get to watching the finale of the current season, I'll probably forget the spoiler anyway lol.

I read it a couple of days ago. Surprising no one, I find it horrendous.

Yep, I'm done with eating calamari. I always enjoyed it, but those things are too intelligent to eat. Feels like sci fi horror, breeding and harvesting intelligent animals for their meat.

Absolutely not.

Hopefully this doesn't put you back on calamari, but it's squid, not octopus.

I don't care much for octopus meat so opposing farming something I don't eat is easy for me. Science tells us that octopuses are sentient beings with an almost-alien intelligence; breeding them for food just feels wrong. The article briefly mentions that pigs are arguably sentient as well, and I do love pork in its many manifestations, so I'd be a lot more conflicted about ending pig farming. But pigs entered the barn long ago, whereas octopuses are still wild animals. Let's keep them that way.

I could really go for some grilled octopus, it's been ages. Like late 1980's on Crete.
I don't really want to think about how smart they are, usually smarter beings are less happy than beings that aren't smart anyway so maybe I'm doing them a favor. Please end it, tired of swimming around in all this plastic.

...and these door knobs are really nifty

It doesn't, and fair enough. Even the fresh dishes I loved at a local greek restaurant were squid, not octopus, now that I think about it.

Whoops. I might never have actually had octopus. Now I must! That big brain must be delicious!

It IS delicious, either via sushi, or Portuguese style with rice, but I no longer eat it for … moral (?) reasons.

I always like it when I go to Greektown -- either marinated served cold, or grilled where it truly resembles BBQ chicken, except with little suction cups that when grilled, turn into tasty bits.

Squid is a little more versatile. It can be fried. baked (I ordered stuffed squid once...asked what it was stuffed with and the answer was "more squid") and of course in a variety of Italian seafood pasta dishes. To quote Emeril Lagasse, "There are two ways to cook squid -- 60 seconds or 60 minutes...in between you get rubber bands."

I think I had cuttlefish once, but don't recall having a specific opinion on it. It's more of an octopus-squid hybrid.

I have a Thai friend who really likes dried cuttlefish. Tastes like slightly fishy bacon.

Octopus-inspired grasper gets it right by mimicking mucus

Unlike most manmade suction cups, octopus suckers have no problem forming a seal on objects with rough, curved or otherwise irregular surfaces, such as rocks. For some time now, it has been thought that this effect was due almost entirely to the soft, malleable nature of the sucker tissue.

Dr. Tianqi Yue and colleagues at the University of Bristol, however, wondered if the importance of the mucus secreted by those suckers was being overlooked. In order to find out, they built an artificial octopus sucker.
