[movie] Uncharted...based on game

Meh, I can accept it maybe. But his voice is SO not Nathan Drake. I wish Nathan Fillion was like 20 years younger. I could see him play Drake around the time he started Firefly.

I'm confused. Is Wahlberg in this movie or not? All I see is a blank space with zero discernible talent in the scenes where I think he's supposed to be featured.

How come when they showed the ring they weren't singing "Golem the evil one crept up and slipped away with her?" Now I'm confused, what is this movie supposed to be about?

Sully is young, too. But if you look at the 'flashback' sequences from Uncharted 2, when a very young Drake first met Sully, it fits a lot better. This isn't a story of an established Nathan Drake, it's an origin story. It does, however, borrow from iconic moments of at least a couple of the games.

Well the trailer certainly didn't impress me, but I do like Tom Holland so we'll see.

Good lord, that was terrible. I especially love the part where he propelled himself forward at 250-300 mph to get back into the plane.

I generally like Holland, but he's 100%, completely wrong as Nathan Drake.

If Tom can get through puberty maybe his voice will fit.

While they did get the aesthetics down, and even copied the plane scene from the 3rd game, the casting does feel quite off the mark. Tom Holland is decent, though I'm not convinced he's the best fit for the role. In many ways, he looks way too babyfaced. And the trouble with Mark Wahlberg is that he simply doesn't evoke the fatherly nature of Sully. Should have gotten someone southern with a drawl. As Sully's supposed to be an experienced treasure hunter, he doesn't evoke that as well. Supposed to be some kind of prequel to the games, but if that's somehow supposed to generate interest in the games, especially now that the 4th one is coming to PC, well, they're doing a terrible job. Kind of makes me leery on the Last of Us adaptation now too.

Well this IS an origin story. I don't think Drake or Sully are as old as they were in the games, which will explain the casting (even if it doesn't feel right).

Well, the thing is, the games did have some flashback sequences, going back to Sully and Drake meeting for the first time. And they did not look like that.

Spoiler:
I'm not too worried what they look like. Actors aren't going to look like video game characters unless the characters were based on actors. If anything, they should have gotten somebody younger for Drake.

On the other hand, they really needed to give Sully his moustache.

Thing is about Tom Holland is that he's both a little too young to be an older Drake, and a little too old to be a young Drake. He's caught in awkward middle. The fact that he's young and skinny doesn't help the fact.

That I can agree with. He comes across as an early-20s and an mid-teens at the same time. It works better for Spidey than it does this.

Somebody did a fan fiction version with Fillon that is far superior.

I’m the exact target audience, but this looks absolutely awful. Every trailer looks worse, somehow.

That fan film is amazing at capturing the essence. If only we'd get a movie along those lines, possibly with the same actors reprising their roles. This movie on the other hand seems to have fallen into the same trap that most game-based movie adaptations do, which is to project something far different. There's no reason why there couldn't be a movie with the actors from the fan film and not have it be a movie that introduces the characters, and properly I might add, to a moviegoing audience. It rubs me entirely the wrong way. Why on earth does Sully have a NY accent, for example? And how can you have Sully without a mustache? I know about the joke, but come on. It feels so much like they're trying to fit the property to the actors rather than fitting the actors to the property.

I looked it up and Fillon is the same age as Wahlberg (51).

Let’s check in with some early reviews, shall we?
Uncharted, review: Mark Wahlberg fits this role like a ballgown fits an orangutan
Yup, that sounds about right.

Tom Selleck would have made a great Sully.

He would, but I don't know if he'd be up for playing in action movie these days. He's not young anymore.

This is on Netflix now, so the wife and I watched it last night.

I don’t expect anyone here to like it. At best it’s a fun but forgettable movie.

I told my wife as soon as it was over that had they named it anything other than Uncharted I would have liked it a lot more. It just doesn’t fit the games at all.

I’m a sucker for silly treasure hunt stories though, so once I stopped thinking of it in terms of the games I began to enjoy it a lot more. My wife, who has never played the games, enjoyed it well enough.

Having just seen it, I couldn't get past them breaking the laws of physics so badly on the plane fight. And the boat fight. And absolutely anything that involved moving gold.

Just saw this. Oh god, it was even worse than I thought it'd be, and I had low expectations going in. I don't even know where to start.

Ok, maybe Tom Holland? Completely miscast. He simply isn't a very believeble Nathan Drake. Maybe it's the script and what he was given to work with, but this movie portrays Tom Holland as not having much acting range. It doesn't help that Mark Walhberg gets the better lines leaving Tom to blankly stare into the distance in response many times throughout the movie. It's all the more ironic that Walhberg was once criticized for the same thing. Yeah, I hate to say it, but Mark Walhberg steals any scene they're both in, leaving Nathan Drake looking like he's bumbling along, in his own movie. As a result, Nathan Drake in this movie doesn't really feel like much of a character. In a better script, that simply wouldn't have happened. The movie even messed up Nate meeting Sully for the first time, ie in a bar (yeah real creative) vs a heist like in the 3rd game setting them up for a mentorship. The movie even stole similar scenes from the 3rd game where that would have happened, with Younger Nate and Sam, but they drop the ball on Sully.

The treasure hunting felt like it was high-stakes with a low-stakes flair, if that makes any sense.

And that's not even counting the crazy physics-defying action pieces. They end up feeling out of place even in a movie like this. Yeah, it's a very forgettable movie. Sad thing is, because of the performance of this movie, we're not likely to see another one that could potentially fix the mistakes.

There are movies I wish I could go back in time and see it again for the first time.
I wish I could go back in time and not see Uncharted.
