Has anyone looked at motherboards/CPU's lately, or currently in the process/researching?

I normally am OK doing it myself, but not feeling it this time around, especially after having spent forever and a day doing GPU research. Much prefer Intel, but I could be persuaded to do AMD if you have a compelling argument.

How much money and how long do you want it to last / be upgradeable?

You can do really well with Ryzen 5 / AM4 right now. I have went back and forth with team blue and team red over the years. I have an interim machine I threw together with a Ryzen 5 5600X (now down to $170) and it is doing great for 1440P gaming with a 6700XT card. I know about the over voltage issue on the X3D chips and it looks like that is sorted.

I will be building 7800X3D machine this summer. A Microcenter is opening in Indianapolis and a celebration is in order.

I know Tom's is not the best, but it is still a good reference point.

My strategy is to go to New Egg and narrow the field down a bit and then search by most reviews. I will then research the high volume ones to make my choice. Looks like plenty of options for the B550 chipset at around $110 for mATX form factor.

this is also my recommendation

Even coming from an i5 8400? I was told that is a serious bottleneck relative to GPU.

AM4 is a good budget option but it's EOL. If so, then focus on the 5800X3D. While AM5 is a step up price wise including the need to spend a little extra on memory, the runway is long on it.

I also wouldn't be buying Intel right now if gaming is in the mix. They can be competitive with some of the current AMD line but the pricing isn't that much better and the thermals might balance that out.

I just dropped a 7800X3D in my rig and got 10 FPS in Cyberpunk on Psycho. It's a magic chip and it uses 40% less power to boot so it's cooler/quieter.

That 5800X3D chip is less than 30% faster than my current i5-8400, if userbenchmark is be believed, and at $290 just for the CPU. It’s a bit more than I’m willing to spend. IIRC motherboards and RAM for AMD are $$ right now, compared to the Intel equivalent.

I guess I’ll wait to upgrade until I can get more like 50% better performance for a bit less money.

Not even sure why I’m tire kicking since I can run every game I’ve thrown at my current rig, maxed out details at 1440p.

I’ll just bask in that new reality for a while. Like with my GPU upgrades, when I start noticing that I have to turn settings down, I’ll revisit.

That does not seem possible. Based on the benchmarks I can find it appears to have almost double the performance of a i7-9700K, which is more like what I would have expected. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 3D&id=4823

Sorry, should have clarified that the 30% (27% actually) refers to ‘real world speed’ whatever that means.

Really all I care about, whatever CPU I eventually move to, is will there be a noticeable difference in speed (mostly games, but non-game performance as well).

I care much less what benchmarks say (except for those that do CPU comparisons using FPS numbers, in the resolution I game in).

Is upgrading to DDR5 worth the extra $65-$75? Wondering if you would notice the difference outside of benchmarks.

How long until you'll be able to upgrade again? What is the refresh rate of your monitor? If it's only 60 Hz, you won't notice imo. Otherwise, DDR5 would be nice for proofing while giving some benefits now.

Gigabyte has some nice motherboards coming. Thats greats news for me because next year I may be able to start upgrading. I dont trust ASUS and I dont like MSI. Other than them and Gigabyte theres not much out there in the mobo field these days I dont think. Least that Ive seen.

My non-gaming monitor is 60, not sure what the gaming monitor is, but at least 120.

I typically wait until I see obvious performance degradation before I upgrade anything.

What does memory speed have to do with monitor refresh rate though??

You are probably not going to notice the difference between DDR4 and DDR5, but if you don't upgrade you PC often, pay the $45.

Thanks! I’m starting to think I won’t even notice (in gaming at least) the upgrade from the 8400 to something modern, and in the price range above.

My current mobo uses DDR4, if that matters.
