Favorite Old Games
So I was thinking, now that Home of the Underdogs is fair game, why not share some of our favorite games that we like from that site. I've been gaming for over 20 years but it's not as if I've played every classic out there, and I'm sure that most of you have missed some gems and cult classics yourself. This topic is a way to share your favorite old games with your fellow OOers.
My initial offering is Constructor, a fun little game where you are tasked to build a neighborhood, replete with shops, neighborhoods, estates, construction yards, etc. You must not only compete with rival developers, but also deal with the mob and local police. It's a very fun game that you'll need DosBox for if you're running NT or XP.

If you read the CoC, you will see that we're allowed to link to HoTU now. I don't mean to be rude, but if you have an issue with that part of the CoC, I would ask that you take it to the MetaForum, as it's outside the scope of this topic.

Oh boy, here's one right on the front page, and an undisputed classic. Great visuals (excluding the pixelated 1st person view), in particular the lighting scheme, terrific sound design, and absolutely compelling gameplay:
Dungeon Keeper.

No, I have an issue with warez sites that distribute stolen property.Suitably Ironic Moniker wrote:If you read the CoC, you will see that we're allowed to link to HoTU now. The Magic Candle -- IMO best 8 bit CRPG that was not an Ultima.
Paradroid -- Brilliant action/adventure on the C64, marred only by lackluster graphics for the robots (they were all identical sprites differentiated only by a number label).
Ultima V -- IMO the greatest 8 bit CRPG and still one of the best ever made.

Oh, man, I saw Caine put Relentless. I'd forgotten about this game. It was incredible.
Others I haven't seen posted are (in no particular order):
Dune (the original)
The Chaos Engine
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Moonstone
BioForge
Full Throttle
Blackthorne
Flashback
Quarantine
Dark Forces
The Lost Vikings
I'm sure there are other favorites I've missed but this is a good list.

CRUSH DELUXE! That is always on my hard drive. Always.
If only they hadn't used M Player as the Multiplayer option.
Hidden Agenda is probably the best political game ever made. The best part is that you have to email the developer, then write him back with impressions AND make a donation to an NGO to get the game.
But it models the 1980s political world of Latino America. Try it out! Really!

I've been thinking of replaying the Original Land of Lore. I bought the game when it first came out and it became one of my all time favorites. However, the CD revolution was just around the corner and about a year later they re-released Land of Lore with voices (Patrick Stewart) and a ton of new music. I never bought the updated game and a couple years ago when I was looking for this gem, it was no where to be found.
Thank you Underdogs

The original Lands of Lore is fantasitc game. I bought the CD version when it was cheap because I liked it so much when I had played it on floppy earlier.D.A.Lewis wrote:I've been thinking of replaying the Original Land of Lore. You should try Starshatter or Jumpgate. They keep me busy enough. I-War 2 also keeps me busy in the space sim arena.D.A.Lewis wrote:As for old games, I'm currently replaying Wing Commander 3.. Boy do I ever miss Space Sims.

I bought Starshatter, but haven't really gotten into it yet. It didn't grip me right away. (The thing I like about WC, Freespace 1/2, Tie Fighter, etc is the overall story I feel like I'm involved in. This is helped tremendously by the acting/cutscenes/etc of course.) I-War 2 I recently picked up on Ebay and it's in the "To Play" pile. I'll check out Jumpgate - don't know much about it.Veloxi wrote:You should try Starshatter or Jumpgate. They keep me busy enough. Jumpgate is like Elite or Privateer in a MMO environment. One of my favorite games, as I've been playing it for four years, and I don't plan to stop any time soon.Vesper wrote:I'll check out Jumpgate - don't know much about it.

It isn't as good, but try out Darwinia. Seriously, its as close to a Syndicate remake as I think we'll get.RookieCAF wrote:Syndicate. Ditto.

There are several abandonware sites out there that offer both older and newer gamers the opportunity to sample many classics.
