Re: My router is capping my internet speed
I'll stick with my sucky DSL for now.
Speaking of WRT54... I had one of those way back when, could be rev 5 or 3. Don't remember.
Read a couple forums. The consensus seem to be get Tomato or other custom firmware on there and try to tweak it so you can minimize the CPU load, which will get your throughput up. And Tomato seem to have a CPU meter. You may also want to slap an external cooling fan on it.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
i have a WRT54GL with Tomato. based on this conversation, i decided to see for myself and ... the speeds i'm getting are 2x what i thought they were!FishPants wrote:Any of you guys still running WRT54G series routers should replace them ASAP. The reason you're getting crappy throughput rates on that thing:
1. Just because it says it's 100mb port doesn't mean the ASIC supporting it can run that speed.
2. Your router is easily pwned, who knows maybe every time you plug it in you've become part of a botnet and that's killing some of your bandwidth by participating in DDOS attacks?
3. It's an old piece of crap, find one that's readily DD-WRT compatible (or has good stock firmware). My old Netgear WNDR3700 routers were champs on stock firmware (DD-WRT was mediocre on it).
(not that i ever need 60Mbps down... i'd gladly pay less for slower speeds if i could, but Comcast doesn't make that possible.)

I have to pay extra to Time Warner just to get that.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
Waaaaa! I can't watch HD movies on three TVs and download a 25 GB game from STEAM in less than 2 hours. Waaa!
The ISP is finally getting hammered enough by residents that they're considering putting "high speed" lines in. But only if they get enough official requests and it's only in a certain part of the town. Of course we're not in that part of town, but I'm submitting a form anyway.

Did you seriously just recommend a $500 router for home use, and then proceed to suggest spending an additional $500/yr for "support"?? What the fuck are intruders doing to your home network to justify that kind of expense?FishPants wrote: I'm currently running a Fortigate 60D at home for the intrusion prevention stuff (Was doing a PoC for a work related project and got to keep it). Ok, after putting random numbers in the speedtest url I feels slightly less 3rd world.

Dont know why my speedtest ping is so slow.
Whats kinda interesting is Ive always gotten 5 megs more than I pay for. Im paying for 60 and get this..
So Im getting more extra than a lot of others pay for alone.
Have you guys seen Google's pricing plan? Its F'n amazing.

No, not horrible. I'm happy with my speed. In fact, the only problem I have with my WRT54G is that it sometimes chokes when I have multiple connections at once.

In true Grandpa Simpson style, I have mailed a letter to my ISP (as they require) regarding higher speeds. I even included a picture of the speed test to let them know I don't appreciate what they're currently offering.

Include a copy of all of our speed tests, and just end the letter with a clean white page with the letters "WTF?" on it.Smoove_B wrote:

5 Mbps down in 2015 should be reasonable cause to riot.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
Cable company called and gave me an unofficial estimate that it would cost ~$10,000 to connect me to their network, giving me access to 35 Mbps.
I'm actually considering it.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
They were about 1/4 a mile from me years ago. They told all of us residents that if we signed an agreement with them together and we each paid so much..i think it was $1000 ...that they would run it on up to us. None of us bit. A year later they ran it themselves and we got free installs for joining for nothing at that time

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
I recommended it for anyone that has the money. It doesn't crash, it intercepts malware, has intrusion prevention, acts as a vpn concentrator and end point, scans emails for malicious attachments and also does content filtering among many other things. It's really quite nice.RLMullen wrote:Did you seriously just recommend a $500 router for home use, and then proceed to suggest spending an additional $500/yr for "support"?? Re: My router is capping my internet speed
I was getting about 7mbps/1.5mbps at home and decided to call Comcast to see what was up. They told me the tier I was paying for provided 6-8mbps. I told them a competitor could give me 55mbps for the same price (~$60, no bundle). They gave me the loyalty number and they were able to bump me up to 50mbps, lower the price, and switch out my modem with a docsis 3.0 modem.
This is what I get now wireless-
I'll take it.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
My wired Ethernet connection, not too bad I think. Wireless is roughly half this amount on the download side, and about the same on the upload side, which is a little weird.

Pings are usually lower around 9 or 10ms. Upload is usually better as well. Still good enough.

Re: My router is capping my internet speed
Most sources I've read call anything sub-100 'good enough' for multiplayer gaming, with sub-75 being ideal. 34 seems pretty damned great - I can't think of much where a few milliseconds less would matter. 34 is already one tenth of the blink of an eye.Alefroth wrote:Not in the Philippines.Blackhawk wrote:Is a 34ms ping really all that bad?
