Yeah I blew up a thing when I was trying to fix SSL this morning. Hopefully we'll be back up soon.

It's coming back online, hang tight. Should be tomorrow sometime. We had to rebuild the server and it's currently (very slowly) repopulating the data from a disk image.

Needless to say, we're taking a hard look at a few things. Expect some changes after we get back up. :ninja:

Heh, I am imagining Engine's relief that he doesn't need to put together the list for this week. :P

I can only imagine how painful this must be to try to fix. I can't think that anyone is happy with this much down time. Good luck to those slaving away in the salt mines of server rebuilding.

Ok, the front page of the site is back up (though we lost a few days of posts). We're still trying to fix the forums, and we'll have un update on that later today.

Thanks for bearing with us, everybody! This has been an ordeal to be sure :P

I think it was a password :) Honestly, that was so long ago I don't remember. Is there a way to merge the two?

[EDIT: I actually think it was the apostrophe that made it impossible to login or change password at the time, after a software update or something...]

Not to be too analytical but I think the problem here is you did a "what did you play?" as opposed to a "what are you going to play?" thread. The latter is filled with much more excitement and anticipation for what's to come, while the content of the former can simply be encompassed into the latter.

Happy now?? ;)

Not to ruffle any feathers, but has there been any thought to a merger between the two sites? GT seems focused on having an actual website with a frontpage where OO's focus is on its forum, and it would seem that the each would have something to offer the other and be mutually beneficial.

The GT forum software is integrated with the site to some degree and the forum software itself is awful. GT is a business and OO is a hobby. There are really only two active posters on GT, at least on the gaming forums, that don't post here. Rittchard is the third that has been more GT than OO. I think Engine doesn't like that consoles have been kind of second class here with a segregated forum that muddies discussion since most games are cross-platform.

In the end it's not a simple thing.

I don't like that much myself, and have pushed a couple of times to have the console and PC Games forums merged. It would be easier, it would give more more discussion of cross-platform games, it wouldn't alienate people, and it honestly doesn't make sense to do it the way we do anymore. It's a relic of Gone Gold that was at least justifiable a decade ago - but not anymore.

It isn't like the old objection ("too much traffic would push posts off the page too fast") is still valid.

Oh, and the Bargain Bin and Trade Forum need to be merged. The Trade Forum is really just a single thread (Pay it Forward Freebies.) Trading PC games isn't really a thing anymore. The entire forum beyond that thread has received exactly two posts in the past year. Moving PIFF to The Bargain Bin would give it and any actual trade/buy/sell threads that much more exposure.

The nature of electronic gaming has changed significantly in the last decade and now that we're all old and soft, merging the console and PC gaming areas would likely make sense.

And see, that's why I thought to mention it. As a forum, OO seems to get a bit more traffic and posting. There really isn't all that much difference between the two forums other than that.

A few years ago I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Now? I don't hate the concept of the two being merged. It would give GT a community, and potentially give OO some fresh blood. I'd hate to see this community die of the slow attrition we've been experiencing over the years. With no front page to draw people in, we rarely replace those who leave. (In ancient times GT was our sister site, for those who don't know - OO started as Gone Gold, GT started as Console Gold, a Gone Gold spinoff.)

Exactly my thoughts. It would basically play to each site's strengths.
