Re: Wordle
I didn't realize it could use words with double letters. I was totally stumped until I put in today's solution as a completely random guess.

Wordle 208 4/6
The last guess took forever since I had an idea of how the word was supposed to be structured, and also figured out the first letter, but didn't have many useable consonants left.

Seeing some of these guesses made me think that if we ever find it too easy, it might be fun to require the previous day's word to be the first guess on the current day.

We had the same second word!
Also: why not use a letter you know is in the word after your first guess in your 2nd and 3rd guesses? Just trying to suss out what other letters might be in the word?

Silly, maybe, but so what? Everyone is playing, it seems, and the obsession makes sense β not because the game is exceptional but because itβs exceptionally suited to the moment.
A lot of us are feeling A L O N E this season, even though the loneliness was supposed to end last spring. That variant after variant after variant insists on barging in to interrupt our return to normal engenders a sense of defeat β and exhaustion. About a year ago, βpandemic burnoutβ entered our vocabularies, and now weβve stumbled upon the consummate burnout game.

Re: Wordle
Guardian
But what if Wordle mutated into a much more confrontational, brain-burning trial? What if Wordle became evil? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Absurdle.
Absurdle is the invention of a designer who goes by the alias βqntmβ. Consider it an alternative ruleset to Wordle β a game that sharpens the original premise into a horrific machiavellian scheme. The gambit is heady, but Iβll try to explain it the best I can.
Wordle is circled around a single word the player is trying to deduce by eliminating the letters on the board. Absurdle, on the other hand, never picks a specific answer, and instead pares down the list of potential solutions as little as possible with each entry.
So, for instance, if the player starts off with βPRUNEβ Absurdle will identify a bucket of words composed of letters that do not appear in that five-letter combination and take refuge within it. Counter with βADIEUβ and the list gets smaller. The more guesses you make, the smaller the answer list gets, until a resolution is forced from the thick matrix of logic. The goal is to back Absurdle into a corner, where, through all of your guesses and potential letter arrangements, there is only one word in the dictionary that fits the algorithm that you and the game have created. Voila, youβve beaten Absurdle at its own game.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: Wordle
Only bummer with Absurdle is if you use the same words, it follows the same path. By cool if it was randomized.

Re: Wordle
Kind of. It doesn't choose a word until it is forced to. But it picks a clues based on keeping as much of the dictionary open as possible. But if I start with ADIEU, it always chooses to say the A is yellow and all the other letters are gray (at least in my n-4 sample size).LordMortis wrote: βThu Jan 13, 2022 4:20 pmDo you mean it decides the word based on choices you make, so you are looking for a path to by eliminating letters, words?
I just tried this one which was also fun.

I tried Absurdle but it doesn't do much for me. I think that's because, for me, most of the fun of Wordle is that it's once a day and everyone gets the same word.

An adversarial version of the excellent Wordle. You have unlimited guesses. More information.
C R A P E
S T I M Y
F U N N Y
D O I L Y
H O B B Y
W O N K Y
W O O Z Y
You guessed successfully in 7 guesses!
That was enough for me. I'll just do my daily wordle now.

Omg that was very hard. I got lucky at the end. Took me a good long while to even come up with any words for the last 2 guesses.

Fun fact: Back when people still said "thee" and "thou," "you" was plural, presumably because nobody thought of "thouse."
