Re: 2017 Cyber Monday bargains
I hope there are sales on Amazon to get a new HDD to replace mine that died this morning. Even before any alleged sale, prices for a 1TB drive are ridiculously cheap. Then again, if the next drive only only lasts 15 months, maybe cheaper isn't better.

Should be a 3-year manufacturer warranty on your recently dead HDD.

Yeah? It's been so long since I've had a failure (20 years?), I guess I remember when it was only a year from purchase? I'll look into it - figured it was a dead issue. Thanks.

Re: 2017 Cyber Monday bargains
How painful was this failure and are you willing to take a chance with the same model (possibly refurbed?) It's been a long time since I had to cash in on the warranty (most have been 3 years forever). In one case, I had two Deathstar drives fail on the same day. I did get them replaced via warranty, then eventually threw them away unused. No way was I going to trust those things with a scrap of my priceless data.

Re: 2017 Cyber Monday bargains
Just lost all my STEAM game installs; not painful at all - now it's about the time needed to re-acquire 900 GB of games via a 5Mbps DSL line. Yeah, that was one of the reasons I was considering just getting a new drive from a different manufacturer for $50. Since the two 1TB drives were purchased at the same time, I'm guessing they were likely manufactured together as well - or at least part of the same manufacturing generation. What are the chances of two failing within days of one another? I guess I'll see.

Re: 2017 Cyber Monday bargains
This discussion brings me back a decade or so, back when I seriously got into using my PC for gaming and other stuff and I got a backup external hard drive. That died just after its warranty expired , so I replaced it with two external drives, plus later I added another drive which I keep stored up high in a closet. After all, back then it was considered good if a hard drive lasted a year or two. And about five years ago I started a routine of running a complete backup of all the drives every week or so, just in case.
And of course, since that time I've never had a hard drive failure .

Best use of ours so far has been mac and cheese (multiple times). And while delicious, I really need to branch out with the capabilities of that thing.

I was debating buying a new slow cooker, since mine is cheap and runs really hot. Checking Amazon, though, I wasn't thrilled that most of the options these days are super-fancy multi-function contraptions - I don't need a yogurt maker/rice cooker/pressure cooker/whatever/all-in-one, I don't want to pay extra for the functions that I don't need plus it just adds more points of failure. Although I do really like the looks of this one. Not today, though.
I do love me some crock pot mac & cheese - one of my absolute favorites.

Picked up a two-pack of smart plugs that are Alexa-compatible for $25 (normally $70). I've been messing around with a tp-link one that I bought with my Echo Plus and love it. Using it right now to cut the Christmas tree lights on and off. These aren't the same brand as the tp-link which kind of sucks since it uses a different app, but I figure if I'm controlling them primarily through the Echo then it doesn't really matter. That price was just too good to pass up.

Wonder if you can make KFC style pressure cooked fried chicken in a instapot?

Did you get the Duo Plus 6 quart on Amazon? I was debating that one then it was gone.

I just dropped $90+ for myself for the season pass for Six Flags over Texas. Includes the base level Flash Pass and free parking, which is a deal in and of itself.
I work five miles away, so I may be taking some half-sick days for some afternoon trips on cooler workday afternoons, or just stopping by post-work on random Wednesdays.

She's right about both the Siracha and the mustard...if done to measurement, you really won't taste either one...don't leave them out!
