There is a new one going around. Steam users: Don’t fall for the “I accidentally reported you” scam.

Re: My Steam Account was Phished
I'd think that scams like the reporting scam would have limited mileage and lose traction quickly, given that I think Steam users are generally knowledgeable. Still, it's the kind of thing that once you see once, would be pretty hard to fall for, especially if one doesn't do any trading. It's like those sextortion scams that break down in effectiveness if you don't use a webcam.

Waiting for that one to come around to me, so I can respond, "OMG! I was just about to tell you THE SAME THING!"

FWIW, here's a useful preventive tip that may help protect OO'ers from this and similar scams in future:
Whenever anyone provides you a URL via Steam, get into the habit of copying & pasting it into CheckPhish.ai to scan the link and clue you into possible phishing attempts.

Absolutely; in fact, I take the extra step of using FIDO hardware token-based 2FA everywhere possible, and would much prefer that Steam supplement their proprietary Steam Guard 2FA by adding support for FIDO universal two-factor protocol, as explained below:

Ugh, my son fell for a variant of this today - an offer from 'Steam' for three months of Discord Nitro (something he wants.)
Now comes the joyous process of dealing with Steam support and trying to recover his account - the email and password were changed within seconds.
If any of you are also friends with MrMustard3339 (and I know a few of you are), kindly ignore any messages from 'him' until this is sorted out.

Re: My Steam Account was Phished
I got my son's account back in just a couple of hours. I put the support ticket in immediately (to get in the queue), then as soon as I was able to research what they were going to ask for, I updated the ticket with as much of it as I could in advance. This included opening the ticket from the original email address the account had been registered to, providing full details on the credit card used for purchases (minus some digits and the security code, of course) such as name and billing address, and providing screenshots of account pages for retailers that keys on the account were purchased from ("This key was redeemed on August 9th" with a screenshot of the Fanatical account page showing the key.)
A couple of things I've learned about the process. First, the 2FA. My son had 2FA enabled. But since the codes are good for a period of 30+ seconds, what happens is when you log in to a third-party site, they immediately ask for a 2FA code and attempt to log into Steam with your credentials; Steam then sends you a request for a 2FA code (from their login attempt, not yours), which you give to the scammer, and they immediately supply to Steam. They are then in your account, remove the authenticator, and change your email address and password. Every stop of this process is automated and happens within seconds of you first trying to log in. You don't get to say, "Oops, that was a bad idea - I should change my password." By the time you get to 'Oops', you're already logged out of your account.
***And a piece of account security advice: Buy a Steam Wallet card. Even a cheap one. Scratch it off, redeem it on your account, then put the used card and the receipt from the store in a safe place. This one thing could be enough to regain control of your account should you ever lose it, as it gives you a piece of hard evidence, that Steam accepts as proof, that the account is yours.***
My son has learned his lesson. I got bitten by Internet Stupids myself within a few months of getting my first PC myself back in the 90s, and ended up having to close a bank account to regain control. It taught me to be careful, and I think this will teach him the same lesson - he was in a huge panic when he realized that he might lose his entire collection plus all of his progress in all of his games (although that wasn't necessarily true - local saves and third party game logins would still have been safe, but I didn't mention that until later.)

It worked perfectly. It refused to let anyone into his account without access to his 2FA codes.
2FA is still subject to biological interface errors.
(That is, dumb user mistakes - 2FA anywhere is useless if you provide a scammer with your 2FA code.)

Re: My Steam Account was Phished
That's interesting about the wallet codes. That's all I use now (after I was locked out of my account for a few weeks when my credit card company issued a charge back against my advice) to purchase games. I don't keep the cards or the store receipts, but I guess I should just always keep the last one used handy. Ugh.
Maybe next year, maybe no go
