Will OO forever be "just" a forum?

Post by Pointer »

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if there is a meaningful update on the much anticipated front page for OO?

It will. I missed the last couple of meetings because of family and holiday necessities, so I can't give my usual update, but progress is being made.

Yes. Not surprisingly, we slowed down over the holidays and put talks/progress on the back burner, but I anticipate that things will happen in January to indicate that we really are working behind the scenes. If I'm wrong.... well, spank me and call me silly. Hopefully we'll be able to lay some of your concerns to rest early in 2005.

Even though I'd reverse the first word in her post (in addressing the question posed in the subject line), MHS has it right. There was a boatload of (behind the scenes) work done before the holidays, but that stuff all universally got shove aside for everyone to take some time off and enjoy the festivities in their own idiom. Now that we can put that stuff behind us, I'd imagine that we'll be full steam ahead on the various fronts.

There are still a few questions that are out of our/my hands that need be resolved, but I think it's fair to wonder whether there would be front-page content by the end of January. As I said, some things are out of *everyone's* hands who're involved in the process, so we're stuck with the "we're done when we're done" line that gamers love and loathe.

And as far as site progress is concerned, I made my position clear very early on, in this thread. None of the sentiments I expressed there have changed, so I see little need to repeat myself (and, increasingly, even less point to doing so).

At some undefined point, the answer to the thread's title question will become "yes." This is a fairly sizeable effort, and the glacial pace with which it's moving can't support major change (which adding anything resembling significant content to a main page would entail). Unless the level of activity ramps up substantially, it's just not going to happen. Not that I'm blaming anyone - the people running this site never exactly planned to be "the people running a site," so it's understandable that issues of work and free time and level of interest and leadership and so forth would make it hard to get major changes made. Unless a campain is undertaken that whips everyone into a frenzy and gets a lot accomplished in a very short time, I wouldn't count on seeing significant change. Sorry if that sounds like a slam on anyone, as it isn't intended to be. Just my opinion based on what I see from the outside looking in.

I agree in ways to Sith Lord.
I don't think it is going too slowly because I have no idea HOW it is going. I know that there is so much going on behind the scenes that I don't know that I won't pass any sort of judgement: I won't say you're going slow or fast.

That said, the mods and owners should know that they should feel VERY free to ask for whatever they need in terms of support from the rest of the forum. We can all pitch in columns, reviews, previews, artwork, and so on. We're a diverse bunch, and we all have talents that can and should be tapped whenever needed and whenever possible.

I really like OO, and it feels a lot more like a community than GG did because, I think, GG disappeared and we all had so much unknowingly invested in it.

It wasn't on GG. I did it to MHS quite a bit. Of course, that was before she was (a) married and (b) a Mod.

Will OO forever be "just" a forum?
I'm betting it will remain solely a forum through at least the rest of 2005. Anyone care to bet on it? :D

That's the point - OO has been JUST a forum since its inception on October 12th, 2004. But from the beginning, plans have been to add a "main page" with various game-related content. In the last four months, though, there's been practically no information on what's being planned, how it's going to look, when it's estimated to happen, or what sort of target milestones and corresponding time-based objectives exist in the "plan" to implement such a web page. I use plan in quotes because I'm skeptical at this point that anything resembling a true project plan exists for this effort - which, combined with the fact that it's an all-volunteer effort spearheaded by people with limited time and resources, is why I'm increasingly dubious that it will ever come to pass. No disrespect to the mods and admins intended, I just don't think realistically it's going to happen. I'd be glad to be proved wrong.

Oh, I wasn't planning on doing any work for the site, but if there are more positions for "interviewing hot chicks" then sign me up. I might even proof read my writing for something like that.
