I often post complete stories from sites where registration is required, like the NY Times. A lot of people will never read a link to a site where you have to register (even with sites like Bugmenot). I figured including a link to the story as acknowledgement covered the copyright issues. Is that not appropriate?

It's a copyright violation to the best of my understanding.Is that not appropriate?
Now, the appropriateness is a separate issue. We'd prefer people not do that stuff - posting entire articles (even when linked to). And we'll encourage people not too. But that's all we'll do for now. Also note that if someone is posting articles without linking to the source, we most definately will do something.
